This is not like me, but I only watched this movie late last year, I try as a rule never to watch a film twice in such a short space of time UNLESS I really think wifey will like it. She did not want to watch this at all, but since it is my birthday weekend, I get the choose the movie regardless, so I picked this one to re-watch. I can see why a lot of people hated this movie, It's Adam Sandler and his buddies (David Spade, Rob Schneider, Kevin James & Chris Rock) all acting like overgrown kids, insulting each other with crude and infantile jokes. Well I hate to break it to you, but a lot of guys that age when in a group will act EXACTLY like that. We never grow up and fart jokes will always be funny. Anyway, I liken this film to "The Benchwarmers" another movie with Spade and Schneider, a goofy, childish comedy that actually has a heart and is a lot better than you would imagine. A group of friends reunite after many years for a funeral, they stay together for a fourth of July weekend reminiscing and reuniting and generally having fun together after they have grown apart after all of the years. If you of the same age of Sandler and his crew (early 40's) they you will know exactly what this film is about, as you are the person it is aimed it. The moral of the story is kids nowadays don't realize how good they have it, and neither do the adults. Over the weekend everyone bonds and it ends up being a great experience for everyone where they discover stuff about themselves and their friends. Yeah, there is lots of name calling, stupidity and gross jokes along the way, but this movie really does have a serious heart and if you are in your forties, you will surely relate with the characters here. Well worth a look if you can put away your Sandler prejudices (oh yeah, wifey LOVED it too and gave it ****)Read full review
The comedians in the movie are all well recognized and do their usual great job. Even the other adults that aren't known do good. Movie has good value to it for kids but has parts maybe not for kids. This kind of movie is trying too much to be for both ages and you just can't be good for both. The children in the movie were obviously friend's children of people associated with the movie and not actors. Too much with the kids for me. Liked the adult stuff. I say if you make an adult movie leave the kids spots to minimum. If you make a kids movie, don't present it like it's for adults. Good enough to watch and make up your own mind.
Saw this movie with my 14 year old son, and he loved it, I did laugh quite a few times too though. With Adam Sandler doing more family films in recent years, I think he is starting to really get what kids want to see, and still be able to bring back memories for the parents watching these films. The fact that he surrounds himself with what really look to be good friends in his personal life, seem to make these movies even more honest. I would rate this one a 7 out of 10, but since my son liked it so much, I will bump it to a 7.5
I've always been a long-time Adam Sandler fan, and a few of his movies in the last 7 years have been less than what I expected from him. This movie brought back the character that I have always felt Adam Sandler should play. And that's the comical yet sensitive guy. Just like in Happy Gilmore. The movie is quite hilarious- and does have an excellent story line. I think we could all learn a lesson from this movie. I recommend it for any family. There isn't anything in there that I wouldn't find appropriate for children aged 8 + (I say 8 because of the complexity of the movie- its not cartoons and bumble bees). Overall- its a well-balanced movie, in my opinion.
