Well. I am a big’ “Meet me in St. Louis fan for its historic accurately designed look. I also love the MGM restored movie as colors and depth are much more pronounced. “In the good old summertime” let me feeling like I was watching a cheaply produced college production. Costumes were more stereo typical in color and style in the Victorian lite mode while scenes from MGM’s general back lots filled the background with buildings from yes turn of the century but also 1920’s and 30’s. I realize the film never really told the time it was but Judy Garlands red dress in the banquet scene would have had her thrown in prison for obscenity at the turn of the century. The story line has been told so many times over that it’s predictability was glaring. I bought this show to admire MGM’s sense proper prop selection and was hoping for a “Meet me in St. Louis” experience. I was left cold.Read full review
Judy Garland and Van Johnson at their best - this is actually the musical version based on the script of 'the shop around the corner ' staring Jimmy Stewart and later the contemporary comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan 'You've got Mail" the musical version is excellent with interesting characters - and a wonderful on screen chemistry of lead actors Judy Garland and Van Johnson. In spite of the movie title most of this movie takes place at Christmas. Wonderful film , very entertaining. set around the turn of the century ENJOY GREAT SHOW ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

In the Good Old Summertime (1949) stars Judy Garland and Van Johnson as workplace antagonists in a Chicago music store who don't realize they're also secret, romantic pen pals. The story (and a substantial portion of the dialogue) is borrowed from the James Stewart-Margaret Sullavan film The Shop Around the Corner. Both the original movie and this musical remake are charming and enjoyable. The entire cast is very good. "Cuddles" Sakall plays the boss, and the other store employees are played by Buster Keaton, Clinton Sundberg, and Spring Byington. Keaton has a particularly funny scene involving tripping on stairs and falling backwards. It's a "pure Keaton" moment. Violinist Marcia Van Dyke is pleasing as Johnson's friend and neighbor. Also, watch for Liza Minnelli in her screen debut at age two and a half. She's the girl held by Van and real-life mother Judy in the last scene of the movie. There are a few good songs but not as many as one would expect in a Judy Garland musical. This is because the part and the film were not intended for Garland. Judy was called in later to replace another actress. She is nevertheless lovely and sings beautifully, as always. Van Johnson makes a good foil for her. I highly recommend In the Good Old Summertime to fans of movie musicals.Read full review
One of my favorite old time movies. Cute story and great characters. Sort of corny!

'In The Good Old Summertime' is a beautiful, fun, exciting, hilarious & charming movie. The chemistry between Judy & Van Halen is believeable and sweet. All of the actors are great. S.Z Sakall is a little hard to understand sometimes with his thick European accent but otherwise he's good. Buster Keaton is a funny side character. I love this movie. I give it 10/10. See this for all the things I mentioned and also Judy singing. Every song she sings is fabulous but my absolute favourite is when she sings 'I Don't Care'. She does it with such energy, power and humour it's infinitely rewatchable. The special features on the DVD are good. You get 3 trailers (a trailer for 'The Shop Around The Corner', a trailer for this movie, and one for 'You've Got Mail), 2 Vitaphone travel shorts about Chicago in 1948 that are alright but relatively boring and an excellent introduction by esteemed Judy Garland biographer John Fricke. Great price, great movie, great DVD. Buy it now! :DRead full review
