Filmed in the late 30s, the charismatic George Sanders brings Simon Templar to life: with wit and charm, well groomed and well dressed, the Saint outwits both cops and robbers, bringing wit to the witless, insight to the confused and justice to the unjust, and all with a great sense of humor. These films were made when story telling was still a true art form w twists and turns aplenty and characters' charisma and charm held the viewers' attention all the way to the conclusion instead of current movie makers pushing viewers' emotional buttons w car chases, sex scenes and CGI events, to cover up the fact that there isn't much story there to begin with and that the protagonist wasn't all that worthwhile after all, lacking wit, charm or the ability to overcome adversity short of violence. Witty, charming and persistent, a former thief turned detective, Simon Templar, the Saint, makes solving cases a challenging, engaging and fulfilling enterprise, much to the satisfaction of the viewers' moral instincts: Crime must not be committed, but when done, criminals must be sought out and punished.Read full review

DVD ran for several minutes then froze. The second DVD did not run at all. Tried different DVD player with same results, both of which did not have issues with my other DVD's. I never had this issue with any other DVD's from Amazon Have returned it.

"B" movies were the second half of a double feature. That doesn't mean they were of inferior quality! George Sanders usually played villains. His performance here has just the right note of moral ambiguity and playful charm for the Saint. Clever plot and good supporting cast round out the picture. Small masterpieces from a time when Hollywood could make enjoyable films without a blockbuster budget.

The Saint aka Simon Templar, a series of novels written by Leslie Charteris, has never been more aptly portrayed in film than in the 1940's by George Sanders. A theif-turned-detective, Templar uses charm & cunning to solve the crime. Although a little on the lightside for traditional noir fans, this collection will definately make you want to see more of George Sanders, or just listen to his voice, which is very mellow and distinctive in all his films. If you haven't seen him in the movie, "The Picture of Dorian Gray," you are missing a great Sanders role. I love movies from the 40's - this dvd set is great!

I love this era of movies. A bit Charlie Chan-ish and Sherlock Holmes, combined. Beats today's box office movies!.
