I'm getting good at changing these things, we have 3 showers and change out the mixer valve in each one every year because of our hard water. The Moen works at least as good as the generic brands but they are a way better price here than at a home improvement store.

This Moen cartridge needs annual replacing. The entire cartridge. Simply changing the gaskets and lubing won't work. This is my third valve. The original one actually broke at the stem from being so hard to turn, metal fatigue failed. The whole thing gets hard to turn in about 6 months. Before you think, "hard water," I have another house in the same water district using American Standard and it works as well as day one... 10 years later. My parents valves work as well as day one after 30 years. With zero maintenance. This cartridge is epic failure. I just don't want to shell out the bucks and deal with the hassle and disruption of opening up the tile wall, replacing the entire valve, patch the tiles back with visible repairs that I have to stare at for the rest of my life. If you are standing at Home Depot looking at valves, skip this one. Go American Standard.Read full review

I have installed this year for years. DO NOT buy generic equal or off brand. Don’t be fooled by the price they are garbage. Only buy the genuine made buy Moen in the original package that has not been opened.

High-quality OEM replacement part from a top manufacturer. Follow directions for the install and the result is a like-new shower/tub handle that works effortlessly. Please note that removing the existing 1222 cartridge can be challenging because the large black rubber seals on either side of the cartridge tend to harden over time, making it difficult to extract the cartridge. Even pulling on the stem with vise-grips or adjustable pliers may not budge the old cartridge. I had to purchase a cartridge puller and even then removal was slow and difficult - I could not have gotten the old cartridge out safely without the puller. Fortunately, the puller is available in the aftermarket (e.g., Danco 86712 Puller for Moen, at Home Depot for about $13). Again, the new 1222 cartridge itself is excellent. All of the shower/tub handles now work with fingertip pressure rather than needing hard twisting to go on and off.Read full review

Good product, but next time I’ll try to remember to buy the rebuild kit. However, it is much easier to buy the preassembled part if you don’t want to deal with the hassle. I looked at the aftermarket preassembled part at a couple of hardware stores and it seems like you have to fool with it to get it right. So I got the original Moen instead just about $20.00. Look for the original and “price from low to high” to get the best deal. The difference between 1222A & B are that one is sold in big volumes and the other is sold individually.
