This camera is called a "bridge" camera and is intended for those that wish to expand their photo skills beyond a "point and shoot" without buying a Canon Rebel or other pricy piece, plus lenses. Surprisingly enough, the camera has some really nice features and takes a good picture. And, this particular model, X-550, has a view-finder, too! The camera seems a very good buy for the money at less than $100.00! I would strongly suggest a good digital photo "How to" book for learning the tricks of the trade with a more capable camera such as this. However, it still takes a nice "automatic" picture without all the sophisticated stuff thrown into the mix. The manual for this thing is abysmal! In terms of explanations and application of features, they assume that you know a lot about digital camera functions and capabilities. That's why I suggest a "How to" book.Read full review
I HAVE ALWAYS USED 35 MM CAMERAS. I BOUGHT THIS CAMERA, TO BE ABLE TO TAKE "QUALITY" PICTURES, IN A WIDE ARRAY OF "SUBJECT MATTER", FOR/WITH EASE OF USE, AND, TO NOT HAVE TO HAVE THE 35 MM FILM DEVELOPED ANY LONGER. THIS CAMERA, FOR SOMEONE THAT IS "TECHNOLOGICALLY HANDICAPPED", SUCH AS MYSELF, IS VERY DIFFICULT TO "UNDERSTAND" and "OPERATE", IN THAT THE OPERATING MANUAL IS VERY, VERY VAGUE, THERE ARE MANY, MANY SETTINGS and SUB-MENUS THAT "REQUIRE" UNDERSTANDING TO OPERATE THIS CAMERA TO IT'S FULL POTENTIAL. HAVING SAID THIS, THIS CAMERA SEEMS TO BE OF GREAT QUALITY, AND THE CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS FAIR TO SEMI-ADEQUATE. I AM SURE IN THE HANDS OF A "QUALIFIED" OPERATOR, THIS CAMERA IS A "FANTASTIC" BUY FOR THE PRICE. I SHALL KEEP TRYING TO "EXPERIMENT" WITH THIS CAMERA, UNTIL MY RESULTS ARE OF WHAT, I'M SURE THIS CAMERA IS CAPABLE OF. IN MY OPINION, THIS CAMERA IS NOT FOR THE "THROW IT IN THE BAG and TAKE IT OUT AND SHOOT" PHOTOGRAPHER, WITH LITTLE OR NO DIGITAL CAMERA EXPERIENCE. ON ANOTHER NOTE, THE BATTERIES "EXPIRE" RATHER QUICKLY. IN CONSIDERATION, OF ALL OF THE ABOVE, I DO NOT REGRET MY PURCHASE OF THIS CAMERA.Read full review
GE Digital X550 camera was a great upgrade from my original GE X5 camera. While General Imaging, the manufacturer of the GE X series cameras closed their doors some years ago, these cameras have a fast learning curve and easier to switch models than to buy a similar camera from another manufacturer. There are also repair facilities listed on the Internet for repair of the GE cameras if required.

My grandchildren and I are avid photographers! We love taking photos! The GE is easy to use. Not so complicated that you need to constantly refer back to the manual. Its basically point and shoot with some bells and whistles to enhance your photos.

Excellent little camera for a beginner in photography, like me. I have had to learn photography lingo, which can be a little confusing, but the booklet actually does a good job of that, plus Googling questions I've had is also an option. I had a couple of times I had the ISO set wrong for the conditions and took bright white pictures, in other words, blank. I did a reset and that took care of the problem. Therefore I still have more to learn, but this camera has been great for that. The price was right and I'm learning, so I would say definitely buy all beginner's.
