This is one of the earlier Johnny Depp movies worth watching. Based on the story of Jack the Ripper, Johnny's character is able to "see" things, is consulted to try and solve the crimes occurring. When he finally meets the person in question he knows his vision is true. This is a more serious role for Johnny Depp, shows the range he can play and still deliver a great performance.

I give it 2 thumbs up!! I am a big fan of the main character in this film, and he is great at playing this character. the film scenery is amazing. the plot of this movie puts a wierd spin on Jack the ripper killings and reasons why the unfortunate prostitutes were killed. the time is supposed to be old london (ya know back when the Ripper killings took place). the director did an amazing job of recreating the dark dingy streets, damp dirty back alleys, and buildings of old London. Depp plays the clever detective who is in charge of the investigations of the brutal killings and will not rest until he finds the sadistic killer. lots of killing scenes and lots of mutilated bodies to see. If you have a weak stomach avoid this film otherwise I think everyone should see it. And we all know that johnny depp is an amazingly talented actor, although he plays this charcter well (serious, sensitive, and intelligent) the other actors all did their charcters extremely well also and I seriously dont think they could ever make a film look so real (like old dirty london) and the dialogue is perfect! see this one, its truly fabulousRead full review
This is a great movie...a bit on the dark side but great! You'll recognize the "BIG" detective who plays with Johnnie Depp...he's the "BIG" character in all the "Harry Potter" movies, and he does a superb job in this one too. Johnnie Depp's role is rather dark but tender and sensitive. The story is based on Jack The Ripper and is the best one done that I've seen. All scenes are done at night except two - one towards the beginning and one at the end. Even the streets are cobblestone, and the sounds of the carriages and horses on the streets are great. I must add that the scenes of the victims are quite gruesome but not enough to turn your head...just remember you're watching a movie and a well done movie at that! This too is a must see!
Another great performance from Johnie Depp! In tis film he is a detective who has visions. The back guy is actually Jack the Ripper. And this movie tells the tails of the unfortunates that were murdered in london so long ago. To make it cinamatic, of corse, they have an ending unlike that wich really happened (in real life he was never known) and it works very well because, at the same time it blends with what happened in real life. Giving it just the perfect thoery ending. I love putting this in those nights I can't sleep, and watching it all bundled in covers. I recommend to buy or rent! If you are a fan of the Whitechapel murders in the fall of 1888 this movie, although very fanciful, is a cool flick to watch as it does transport you to the eerie area of the slums of the east end of London. The carnage is gory and Johnny Depp is great as always. Coupled with "Murder by Decree" starring Christopher Plummer and James Mason as Holmes and Watson (another fanciful version of the murders), these are two movies dealing with the Ripper that are both must see. They both dwell on the Royal Conspiracy theory making for more intrigue. The 2nd disc in "From Hell" has some cool alternate endings as well as naration, tours of Whitechapel, and deleted scenes.
