This is a true story of a teacher facing an inner city class of high schoolers from different ethnic groups. At first the students are divided and do not trust or even like those different from them. The teacher starts the writing into journals each day and they discover how much alike they really are. Every school teacher who gets discouraged should early have this movie. It can also be a teaching tool for kids in their teens. I had a problem at first with the bad language but soon realized that, hey, it’s what you here today.

not a bad movie, but not a really good one either. if it's a rainy day with nothing to do, this will keep you entertained, it's a story about inner city gangs and the terrible condition of the US educational system, and how one teacher overcomes it.

This is one of the most powerful movies I've seen in a long time that addresses issues of pain, equality, and how one person can make a difference. My daughter is a teacher in a "drive by" neighborhood so I really appreciated the challenge of teaching students at this school and the teacher's "overcomer" attitude. She paid her own high price for her caring and dedication. I also especially liked the fact that the name of Jesus wasn't used as a swear. It proves that you can make an honest movie without offending decency. This movie should be a "must see" for every child middle-school age and older! Highly recommended!
I loved this movie which is based on actually people, and events.I disagree with the previous review to a degree.Patrick Dempsey does a jerky thing in the movie, but if you watch the movie, you kind of feel for his character.I think the directors and producers did well by putting Hillary Swank in the lead role, I don't think someone else could have given such an amazing performances. They also got it right by putting unknowns in the roles of the students,it's so much more real & believeable.I think this is a MUST SEE!
This is a superb movie about real life. Can you imagine a first time teacher going into an integrated public school where kids have been raised with violence their whole lives? These kids had no respect for the new teacher. This wonderful teacher was one of a kind that was determined to make a difference in these teenagers lives. All the kids being from different nationalities, broken homes and a built-in hatred for everyone soon learned that they finally got a teacher that really cared for them. Some of the kids were the first ones in their family to graduate. What a wonderful movie, but there are some colorful words that young children doesn't need to hear. Should have been rated higher than PG-13!!!!!
