A fascinating film adaptation of Brian Aldiss' novel of the same name, it marks the return of Roger Corman to the director's chair, after a long absence. Aldiss, an intellectual writer, if there ever was one, wrote the novel to draw attention to the original. It has a slightly confusing story line, involving time travel, Mary Shelly, Percy Shelly, and other historical characters. It is better understood in the novel form. Film omits some elements, like the bride of Frankenstein, and falls into time-travel cliches, just slightly, near the end. Starring John Hurt, as Dr. Bodenland, the time traveler, his performance seems lost, but that may be the point. Far better is Raul Julia, who, as Victor Frankenstein, acts Mr. Hurt right off of the screen. Film is neither a truly frightening horror flick, nor a great science fiction work, nor a summer blockbuster, and didn't do well at the box office. However HIGHLY recommended for those fans of science fiction novels, and would be a fine addition for those who have a collection of Frankenstein films. Also includes some historical details, unusual for american films.Read full review
