These are great machines but have issues. If you give it very heavy use the stop buttons will go on them and are almost impossible to fix unless you want to take apart about 20 pieces, unscrew motherboards, etc. They are buried in the front, plastic, and connected to a mold. In other words you are out of luck if they go. However if you do one song a week you may get a year or two out of it.

The VF series of Fostex recorders are solid, bullet-proof and dependable. That being said, I wouldn't recommend them to anyone looking to home-record unless the person has a degree in rocket-science. For one, Fostex USA is gone, so there is NO corporate support, tech-line or anything. Even if you do happen to get an owner's manual, good luck with that; it's as if it were written in Japanese, translated into bad Hungarian, translated BACK into Japanese, and then into English. And lord forbid if you break something, if that happens you now own a brick. Also, the inputs are EXTREMELY sensitive, even for line-level sources, my Line-6 guitar pod was plugged into a channel, the power went off for the pod, and it blew the channel on the recorder. (The pre-amps are EXTREMELY sensitive). The EQ is useless, and the CD-RW drive is the most fragile drive I have ever encountered. Also, I can't believe they didn't put a USB out on these decks. All of that being said, the VF series of recorders are WAY better than anything else out there, I wish Fostex would have continued evolving these instead of going with the new style recorders.Read full review
Fostex to me, Is still the pick of choice. Among others the VF160EX is complicated, yet simple. Its overall functions of recording and mixing still sounds as good today as the first multitrack cassette and reel machines of yesteryear sounded! I do wish, The average person could cram "any" massive HDD(500gb) in this unit "that would be sweet" but there are limits. The purchase of my VF160EX was a steppingstone to bringing my studio back to life as well as having that crystal clear sound that Fostex has to offer in its fantastic line of products... **Silver_Ryder_Man**
I'm in a blues band and like to record our shows. This recorder has great sound and I upgraded from a Fostex MR8. It has 16 tracks but you have to get a digital converter to record on all 16 tracks at once otherwise you can record 8 tracks at a time. You have to do a little reading to understand how to use it as well as any other recorder. It has a 40 gig hard drive in it to save your work to. I did a lot of research before buying this one and the price is pretty fair compared to some of the other recorders out there that you could only record 2 or 4 tracks at a time. so I suggest if your looking for a good recorder check this one out before you buy....Tazz
