I really tend to hate duets that pair current singers with deceased ones. There's so much that is usually VERY WRONG. Happily, Forever Cool is a duets album done almost right for the most part. The disc pairs vocal performances of Dean Martin in his prime with artists such as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Kevin Spacey, Chris Botti, Paris Bennett, Robbie Williams, Joss Stone, and Dave Koz, to name a few. Kevin Spacey is featured on two tracks, "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" and "King of the Road.Kevin Spacey, what can you say? His Bobby Darin (in Beyond the Sea)was no fluke. He and Dino make a great vocal pair. He is so good that there are moments where I had difficulty distinguishing his voice from Martin's. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy swings with Dino on two tracks -- "Who's Got the Action?" and "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" -- the latter featuring Shelby Lynne. Lynne & Martin's duet is one of the highlights of the album -- she does a really fabulous job of entering into the spirit of the project, so much so that it's easy to imagine her actually performing with Martin . On "Baby, It's Cold Outside" Martina McBride's famous "big" voice is held in check and she delivers a wonderful, playful vocal. Paris Bennett duet of Baby-O is fun and she is the only one (Other than Kevin Spacey) to actually seem like she is having fun with Dino. BUT THE BEST IS DINO'S SOLO BRAHMS'S LULLABY A CAPELLA at the end of the CD. The one tragic misstep is Joss Stone her vocal on "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me" is the worst cut on this album. Her voice sounds strained (usually does)and "breathy" as if she's forcing herself to sing which she usually does sound Forced. Maybe she needs singing lessons for this style. Oh well this is my opinion of the album so I hope it helps in some regard.Read full review
What can be said? Martin is posthumously magnificent w/a slew of current vocalists. However, Joss Stone's attempt to "cool" w/Dino falls way flat! And as far as Charles Aznavour's duet, you can take it or leave it. Kevin Spacey, what can you say? His Bobby Darin was no fluke. He and Dino make a great vocal pair. Too bad there was no one to try their hand (or voice) at singing That's Amore'. All-in-all, this cd is a winner.
What can you say? Dean Martin was the "King of cool". A truly great entertainer. From his acting to his singing to his fantastic variety show he was always on his game. This cd is filled with all of the great cuts. His voice is timeless and will go on forever. This whole generation led by Dean and Frank Sinatra was a great time in American music and it's a shame that music like this has lost it's appeal. Dean's voice is flawless on this and other cd's. I hope you enjoy it like I did when I first heard it.
Love this CD.
