I purchased the book and DVD, Follow the River, for friends and relatives for Christmas gifts. The DVD brings alive this story of courage before my eyes and features Sheryl Lee who portrays Mary Ingles, a loyal and determined pioneer woman, who persevers to survive under the harshest of circumstances.I love this true story so much because it is all about human survival and is a testament to endurance. It also shows the beautiful, yet dense forests, seemingly unpassable mountain ranges, and unnavigable rivers and streams giving the reader a more realistic view. My ancestry is also Shawnee Indian and I wasn't disappointed with the casting of the Indian people in this DVD. If the budget were larger, I am certain the movie would have been able to capture extensive scenery and more of Mary Ingles's determination in her plight to find her way down the river. Also, the book highlighted reasons for the kidnap, and brought the reader closer to understanding the Shawnee Indians, whereas the DVD was limited on time and doesn't include those parts. However, I decided to purchase the DVD's despite the fact that many wonderful parts of the book are left out of the movie. The book and DVD make a lovely gift because it is a great way to throroughly enjoy a great story. Having the DVD captures one's full attention. I highly recommend the combination book and DVD.Read full review
The movie is a depiction of the struggles of two women battling the elements to get back home after being captured. I watch these types of movies to try to have ideas of what to do if ever I am in a survival situation.

"Follow the River" is excellent entertainment based on a true story of the life of Mary Ingles who was captured by Shawnee Indians in Virginia along with one of her children. I also recommend the book for young adults perhaps 7th grade.

I had seen this movie before and liked it very much. It is about a settlement that was attacked by Indians when most of the men were out hunting and the women were cooking dinner. One of the women that were taken had a small child but she was also expecting. What amazed me in the first part of this movie was she went into labor on the trail and had her baby but then within what I portrayed as a few minutes she had to get up and walk again. Now with having children myself I could NOT have been able to get up and walk after birthing a baby! To me that took courage. In the Indian encampment there was another woman played by Ellen Burgess (spelling may not be right) was an older woman who couldn't run the "gauntlet" and the same woman that had given birth on the trail took her place. They both escaped the Indian encampment and had several obstacles which they overcame in the end. They did have a disagreement and were on opposite sides of the river but both were found by trappers. Very good movie and would recommend. There isn't a lot of action and most might find it boring but it is really a good movie and it is family oriented.Read full review
