I really don't know what possessed the first person who reviewed this cd to write what she did, but you and I will agree it had nothing to do with Ben Harper, or this outstanding release "Fight for your Mind". She rambled on in a non-sensical way...maybe she is in a "Fight for your (or her) Mind", but I will actually give you a review of this release. First off, I am a big Ben Harper fan, but I don't listen to alot of Indie styled music. I have been a hard rock and a reggae fan for decades, and what pleases me the most about the artist Ben Harper is the fact that he blends styles and elements of so many different genres and styles like rock, reggae, folk, R & B, even countryish styled steel guitar that he simply can't be put in a box. This is one of Ben's earlier offerings, and it is raw, with profound lyrics that implore you to look at yourself and the world around you in a new and challenging way. I would very highly recommend that you give this cd a try, and possibly, if you look around places like Pandora you can give it a listen before you decide to buy it. Once you decide to do so, or if you own other Harper material your guaranteed to really respect it, both for the profound, thought provoking lyrics but also for the strong cast of musicians who help him make (and produce) his unique music.Read full review
I have no other Ben Harper CD's, this is my first. After hearing someone on Youtube rave about "Must Have " , CD's This CD was included in his list of Must have. I always like to experiment and try something new. ( I am a 50's 60's and 70's junkie). I only listened to it once, so a fair observation I cannot give. so many times I listen to something enough times that as I become more familiar with a CD, I start to like it more. MY initial rating is 3 stars. I would like to be asked to rate this again after one month.

let me preface this by saying i only bought this for my son, who must be forgiven for he is still a teenager; this Harper person is one of the Lenny Kravitz-least talented shills to come down the pike since the Backstreet Boys, maybe even all the way back to Neil Diamond and Fabian and Dion; every plastic note grates because the garage band skills of his backup band are painfully evident in the ease in which they can switch from one musical format to another and make all of them sound like the dance band in "Officer and a Gentleman"; the chalk slate mating whine of his momma's boy voice totally eclipses any possible meaning his words might engender--imagine if you will James Taylor bemoaning the night he found out Carly ran off to Hyannisport to snort and cavort with the Kennedys; this guy is so bad he makes Tom Jones look like Otis Redding, and at least Tom has the collacas to poke fun at himself and not take himself seriously--which is probably the other reason why Mary Wilson of the Supremes fell in love with him (do you really not surmise the first?); imagine Urkel without the glasses, Clarence Thomas without the republicans, Eldrick Woods without American Express, R. Kelly with a woman his own age, or Slim Pickens riding the bomb in "Dr. Strangelove" no, i take that back--at least both the bomb and Pickens could hold a note... and he bears NO more semblance to Bob Marley in ANY fashion than O.J. Simpson does Muhammad Ali;Read full review
You people are funny. I just love what that 1st woman said even though she blasted the CD. She is a comedienne for sure. But honestly what the last person said is most accurate-Ben Harper may sometimes whine 'like James Taylor when he discovered Carly snorting coke with the Kennedys' funny, but that doesn't take away from the overall value of this CD. Ben Harper is not for everyone. I happen to like Folk, hard rock, Hip Hop, R&B, Hardcore Punk and Country, and I don't own or like all of his stuff and in fact I think he comes off sometimes in public as arrogant. My favorite version/LP of his is with Relentless 7 White lies- but even that has some cuts unfavorable to me. This CD is one to buy before you can't get it. My favorite is Excuse me Mr.
