I learned of the FairTax through the Neal Boortz radio show; needless to say, I was skeptical at first. However, after reading this book, the sequel to this book, and the actual H.R. 25 bill, it amazes me how great of an idea the FairTax is. Sure - it's probably not perfect, but it is when compared to the corruption of the 70,000 page tax code which we "attempt" to follow today. The current tax code taxes people on their production and their achievements while the FairTax allows you to reap the full fruits of your labor while only paying taxes on the money you spend. Basically - would you rather give the government $0.33 of every dollar you earn, or $0.23 of every dollar you spend? Critic or supporter - I would highly recommend everyone to read this book and form their own opinion. It is pretty clear that the naysayers clearly haven't read the book and are merely spewing their own agenda...pretty sad, and desperate in my opinion. Support the FairTax!Read full review
Normally, I have a hard time focusing on non-fiction. Give me my Stephen King, Michael Crichton, and David Wong, but put a tax reform book in front of me and watch me fall asleep. That's the way it is with most of us, I'm sure. The quickest way to clear a room is to say, "Hey, let's talk about tax reform." That being said, I could not put this book down. Not only is the information presented in a provocative, interesting and often funny way, but the idea of the FairTax is so brilliantly simple that I fully expect it to come into law soon. I recommend this book to anyone who supports the FairTax, or doesn't support the FairTax. I recommend it to anyone who hates our current tax code. I recommend it to anyone who hates filling out those tax forms every year. Basically, if you're an American taxpayer (or will soon become one) you need to read this book!Read full review
Being a longtime listener of the author's talkshow, I know about this informative book, and am obviously sold on the idea of replacing the current Federal Tax System with something like this. While it sounds like it ought to work, it should be noted that there is an HISTORICAL BASIS, at least in part, for the Fair Tax, dating back to a system suggested 75 years ago, during the dark days of the Great Depression. In 1934, a medical doctor from California named FRANCIS EVERETT TOWNSEND, proposed a PENSION FUND be established that would pay seniors 60 years of age the sum of $200 a month, to be financed through a CONSUMPTION TAX collected at point of sale, which promised to end the Depression by the surge of consumer spending that would have resulted. UNFORTUNATELY, this idea did not fair too well, in light of the so-called 'lunatic finge', whose competing ideas were viewed with much skepticism. Though dismissed by critics as UNWORKABLE, the TOWNSEND PLAN nonetheless won wide support among desperately poor seniors, more than enough to influence Washington to come up with an alternate proposal, our present SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM, enacted in 1935 !!!!! As to whether it can replace the IRS and the Federal Income Tax remains to be proven, America should be receptive to the Fair Tax, especially since its main goal is to allow for the payment of the present PAYROLL TAX through a UNIVERSAL sales tax that would ensure the solvency of Social Security, as well as MEDICARE and MEDICAID, for the forseeable future. At this point, anything that would replace our present tax system should at least be given a fair hearing.Read full review
I love the manner in which Mr. Boortz presents his ideas on the Fair Tax. Yes he is biased... in part because he believes in the Fair Tax and in part because he intends to sell his readers on the idea. The concepts are well explained and supported by easy to follow scenarios. A very easy read that will only take a few hours to a few days, depending on what sort of reader you are. Don't be surprised if you come away from the read thinking a little differently than you did before you read the book. He intends to sow seeds in his readers' minds.
An excellent book highlighting the details of the FairTax plan that, when approved by Congress, will allow Americans to keep ALL their earnings, increase tax revenues to the treasury, squelch tax evasion, eliminate the cost of tax preparation and compliance, unleash the American economy, promote savings and investment, eliminate the IRS and empower the citizens of the USA. Well written, easy to understand and non-partisan in its message. Worth its weight in gold. Get it- read it- pass it on.
