The typical book that is written about trains shows huge locomotives and cars in scenic settings. The colors are gorgeous, the locales beautiful. This is not your typical train book yet it is well worth a considered look, for what it shows is the people that are an integral part of the railroad world. All the steel and wood of the railroad cannot move an inch without the human element. This 160 page book has a large number of black and white photographs that show the flesh and blood that bring life to the steel. As any railroader can tell you, this is a family enterprise, often with parents, children and grandchildren all working for the same railroad. The photographs are an interesting combination of the glory of what America once had with their passenger trains to massive steam locomotives to the recent day of railroads returning as a key part of our nation's economy. The text is thoughtful and interesting, and for a moment, you are given a look into the cloistered world of railroads. The common thread is the people. It is an interesting view.Read full review
