I started the DASH diet a little over a month ago after having had my blood pressure taken and found out it was elevated even though I was on blood pressure meds. Two weeks after starting the DASH diet I had my blood pressure taken again and it had come down considerably. I have also lost 5 pounds which is not a lot of weight to have lost in a month but it's DIET that is to become a life style change and not a fad diet. I had been following a low carb diet for 35 years and was always eating foods that her high calorie and high fat. Also, I had found it difficult to lose weight on that diet since calorie counting is not part of the diet and the diet does not restrict sodium intake. On the DASH diet I am really enjoying real food for the first time in decades. I eat steel cut oats for breakfast with raisins and walnuts. Used to hate oatmeal but not anymore. I can have a sandwich for lunch with low calorie whole wheat bread, light mayo, lowfat swiss cheese, ham, chicken, turkey (low salt). Basically I eat lots more fruits and vegetables now which I never used to do because they are not part of the low carb diet that I had followed for years. My husband is on the DIET also and he lost more weight than I did. Overall, it's a healthy diet and it's been the top diet in the US for the past three years. Since so many Americans suffer from high blood pressure and are taking medications that could in the long run cause a stroke or kill you! This book gives you a diet that works and if you go by it will lower your blood pressure. I had to start exercising and watch what I ate but after the first week it wasn't so bad. The book also includes menus and even recipes! The doctors explain all about having Hypertension and by losing weight and eating right with some exercise you can keep the high blood pressure away! This method is alot less expensive than buying those perscription drugs! I'll stick to it and continue on! But overall this book is excellent in explaining everything and even the calorie worksheets and the body mass formula. This diet has been proven by doctors and nutritionists.
