Everything you need, and then some
This kit comes with everything you need for the repair, and even some parts that you could probably reuse such as the bolts but the extra peace of mind always helps. The kit itself is all high quality including the gaskets sourced from Elring so you know they are of high quality, and it is fairly straight forward to fit, you will need an impact wrench to get the piston open to replace the rings and needle bearings, i am not a mechanic by any means but it only took me around 4 hours to finish and it was my first time doing this. Expect a rough idle for a short while after fitting this kit, even more so if you have an idle valve delete like i do, it may stall out and/or take a while to crank over, this is just the unit having to fill with oil again to operate properly. The kit contains everything you need to do the job and the components seem to be of high quality. The online instructions are comprehensive and there are also YouTube videos which give added assistance. If you are only changing the Vanos seals, basic tools are sufficient although a small-range torque wrench is useful. If changing the anti-rattle bearings you MUST have soft jaws for a vice and an impact wrench is advisable/very useful because the piston bolt can be very tight (all of this is explained very well, with illustrations, in the instructions). Although the instructions are, of necessity, long and look very involved, it isn't a difficult job (although a bit fiddly because of some of the nut & bolt locations) and is well within the abilities of any reasonable DIYer. I found that ... The kit contains everything you need to do the job and the components seem to be of high quality. I found that fitting the new bearings & rings removed all the axial play in my pistons without the need for any of the adjustments mentioned in the instructions. Time will tell how well the new seals will last but other reviews are positive and my car started and ran perfectly after the installation and threw up no fault codes. The kit is relatively cheap and certainly beats having to buy a complete new Vanos plus you get to see how the Vanos works.

This particular kit includes some parts that the online instructions suggest you should reuse, but aside from that no problems.
The existing gaskets for the cam cover were brittle with age, and I could rattle the pistons on the VANOS cylinders once the oil was removed, so this was always going to be an improvement. When fitting the outer PTFE seals to the pistons, try the larger diameter ones first.

X8R dual vanos repair kit + gaskets

I did a complete vanos overhaul on my BMW E46 330ci using this vanos kit. Firstly I must say that the kit comes complete with everything that is needed to carry out the service, also the instructions are very simple to understand and it does make a huge difference in the proformamce.
