..It's not nearly as good as the original in my opinion. Despite the more professional look and better pacing, I prefer the original for its lack of slapstick. The first worked so well because it was such an unrelenting and grueling experience and was the finest horror film since "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". It didn't take prisoners, and while its a bit dated it still has the power to terrify the audience. Not to mention it had some great if primitive stop motion effects. I really wish Sam Raimi would make another all out horror film again as that's what he does best. That being said, "Evil Dead II" is still quite enjoyable on its own merits. I usually hate films that attempt to combine horror with comedy. While "Evil Dead II" is not quite scary, its often hilarious. Imagine an off the wall combination of "Friday the 13th" with the Three Stooges, and you're coming close. The sight gags are often surreal and inspired, the sequence with the hand being the finest. Also, the film is very atmospheric and still maintains a sense of unnerving creepiness, which was completely jettisoned for "Army of Darkness" which I'm a big fan of. This film has plenty of gore to still appeal to fans of the original. The gore is so over-the-top its difficult to find it even remotely offensive. Special mention must go to Bruce Campbell. While he was a meek and unwilling hero in the first film, he is a completely over-the-top bad a.. in this one! It's a very finely tuned parody performance of action stars. While this is the role that leads him to being typecast, it also made him a cult legend. Its a shame he didn't become a bigger star. While its not as successful as the first installment, "Evil Dead II" is a lot of fun and one of the best combinations of horror and humor.Read full review
Sam Raimi made the first Evil Dead movie for a college final i believe. It is somewhat serious and very much a "B" movie. However, with the profit the first movie made, Raimi decided to do the movie again but with more $ and vision and less restrictions. The result is Evil Dead 2. Basically the same story but done with a renewed vigor. The movie is one of the great comedies of all time if you can stomach the massive blood letting and campy comedy. The Evil Dead 2 DELIVERS. It is an "in your face" (literally) bomblast of gore and blood although somehow not over the top and the comedy is obvious as Raimi intended. The ending is fantastic and the movie serves as one of Raimi's Hall of Famers. Can't explain why the Spider-Man series is so week. But if you like horror done well with a non serious tone this flik will get the job done.Read full review
A wonderful cast, story and blend of horror, comedy, and suspense. The best of its kind in an American genre. Although the prequel and sequel are both good movies per se, this is the gem of that effort. It touches Americana in its essence, from white trash to college jaunting. Its extremely well connected and employs unique camera experiments to successfully make a point. Likewise it is "corny" to the point of art without going beyond that.. and such perfectly casted characters! However rare it is to say, THERE IS NOTHING CRITICAL TO SAY ABOUT THIS MOVIE. It's in my top ten. If there be need of further thought, the inferior (but pretty good) first effort, "EVIL Dead," which was done as a college project, has stellar liner notes by none other than Steven King! This, the second effort, is on the money.. they got it all right. Richard Williams Williamston, Michigan P.S. Blu-Ray viewing is the way to go!Read full review
This was one of my all time favorite horror movies of all time. Sam Raimi did a great job with the script. Bruce Campbell's performance in the movie is what captivates you. The movie is dated (80's) but it holds true. The whole premise of going to the cabin for a romantic get a way and your Girlfriend gets possessed by a demon, and fighting for your life to survive is enough. I bought this movie to add to my collection. I can watch it over and over again. I was impressed how well this movie looked in High Def. Granted the movie doesn't look as great as some of today's movies that are shot in HD to start with. For an old 16mm movie that was blown up to 35mm and now digitally remastered in HD it looks good. A Must have for ED fans with Blu Ray Player.
Bought the three movies for my son. Got them cheaper singly than buying together so im happy too.
