Ok...I bought this guy mainly because CNet gave it a good review and it was a scanner and color printer. It prints color pictures pretty good but I won't write home about it. The scanner did a very nice job. Software is kinda a pain...I don't like installing 40 apps to use a device and this guy will install way too many by default. I would totally recommend this as a very good budget multi printer except for one thing that happened to me... It broke! I left this guy on (actually I didn't...a guest did) overnight and by mid day it wouldn't print anymore. Ive wasted a ton of ink and time trying to get this guy workin again and am very unhappy with the tech support from Epson. If you know you can only have this guy on while actually printing...go get it...otherwise you might want to pass.Read full review
Ink jet printers are tricky. If they sit unused for too long the ink wells dry out and can be a pain to get going again ... if at all. This printer came with the yellow not printing at all. Other three colors are still printing poorly - even after several head cleanings ... all of which suck down the ink! I'm disappointed in the condition of the printer but am not totally surprised. I'll probably end up using it as a repair guinea pig!
Picked up a cx4600 at a thrift store, without a scratch, cheap. After getting it fired up and finding out it didnt work,I did some searching.Seems this printer suffers the same problems all durabrite printers,no printing after cart exchange. The printhead cleaning vacuum tube clogs or disconnects from parking assembly. After clearing the vacuum tube and reinking the carts with dye ink,it printed perfectly. This is a great printer though it is an ink hog. I only use it for copying and quick prints from media cards so it sits sometimes without being used but never have a problem since using dye ink. Im sure I would not be so happy if I had bought it new.
I bought this thing because I needed another scanner and said, "what the heck....." As with other reviewers, the thing just isn't reliable as a printer, however the scanner function--using the oem software is the best I have ever used. In fact when I had a "c" drive crash, and couldn't find the CX4600 original software suite on reinstall, I bought another machine on ebay just to get the software. If you do scanning and appreciate great scanning software, this machine is worth it even if it never prints again!
Please notice that any and all positive reviews for this printer are from those that have had their printer for only a short time. All users (Amazon has over 100 reviews of this printer) that have used this printer for more than about 6 months hate it. It is almost a certainty that the print heads (or tube) will become clogged, use up all of your expensive ink, and leave you without a working printer. Epson knows about this problem and will send you another printer (both in and out of warranty), but the same thing will happen to the replacement. I'm on my third unit. The unit goes through ink very quickly, especially when you have to clean the heads, and the ink is quite expensive. The printer does work well when it is working, but do yourself a favor and stay away from the Epson CX line. This inexpensive printer will cost you a small fortune!Read full review
