I bought this book in view of recent tragic events in South Carolina that resulted in the Confederate battle flag being taken down over the capitol grounds. I really wanted to read a different viewpoint from the one that is pretty much universally presented in the national media. This book seemed to offer that opportunity. Unfortunately, this effort fell short of the mark. For one thing, this book has many typos and misspellings. That does not inspire confidence in the story being told. The essential point that the flag is not necessarily a symbol of slavery and racism but rather honor, valor and courage in battle is made repeatedly. Statistics about how many white southerners were slave owners (less than 7%) and that freed slaves owned slaves as well as American Indians owning slaves is mentioned. I am not certain what bearing that has on today's public perception but I did find it interesting as well as the discussion of how many blacks fought on the Confederate side. The final chapter is the telling of a story of the murder of a white man by blacks allegedly over the Confederate battle flag he was flying from his pickup truck. The stereotypes are incredible. On the whole, this book comes off as a weak effort to defend the battle flag although some points in its favor are made. I am still searching for a better treatise and the one thing that keeps coming back to me is that perception is everything. Changing another person's perception of any symbol is a difficult task at best.Read full review

As a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans I highly recommend this book; it addresses the honor, loyalty, dedication of our relatives to defend our beliefs that our position was best for the Country at that time; today we continue to defend our relatives. Our battle flag is dedicated to honor and commitment to Country and those minorities who try to defame her had better go back and study their history lessons. Our battle flag has been inappropriately used by hate groups but that is not what she represents. We honor her as she ripples in the sunlight and gentle breezes, she represents us as people who care about our Country and those who respect her; long may she wave!
