OK, I give it a C+: A Good story that was poorly told.
A very "Dark" movie. Everything seemed like night time all the time. Good Plot and well chosen actors,(casting was great), the acting was well done by little known actors. Story could have been played a little differently. Confusing at times and some watchers couldn't stay with it. Uneven, mediocre editing. Great actors getting a paycheck that was well deserved. The acting saved the movie from bombing out. Actress Sara Polton stands out! Also, watch "Erin Bizak's" surprisingly fine acting skills in a bad roll. Elysium (DVD, 2010)
The visuals deliver the goods, just amazing, with a tip of the hat to the gritty look and feel of District 9. Also, and this is key, the fight and action scenes are intense and immersive. You feel like you are in them as you watch. The plot is the classic Hollywood story split, and suspension of disbelief is a must to get the full ride from this movie. Part of the story takes place on Elysium , a highly secure, space habitat for the rich and wealthy. The other part of the story takes place on a wild and hairy 2154 Earth A.D. These stories evolve on their own and then merge to get the sparks flying. The acting is solid as you would expect. Everyone gives pretty tight performances that help make the movie that much more entertaining. In all, good sci-fi entertainment, that does what good ... Not the best of Matt Damons but entertaining
While entertaining, this could have been great. It was mis-cast, and the characters were under-developed. While watching, you'll want it to be better. But by the time it's over - well, somehow it didn't quite come together. We would have preferred unknowns, and more development.
