Today is 22 September 2015. It has been almost 42 years since 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was released on 5 October 1973. My childhood memories still recall opening the cardboard covers and removing the (now vintage) vinyl from its sleeve to play. The sound was so robust. The music spoke of concepts and ideas that I was still so naive about. It was an innocent time when music could send you on a voyage dreams. The songs were like a boat floating on a bubbling stream of crackling and popping that enhanced the song as it was playing and filled the silence between the songs. I never thought the day would come when such a treasure would be lost...or nearly lost, as it is. With the dawn of the digital era, Elton John's great corroboration with Bernie Taupin was spun in a new way; twisted, tweaked, remastered, and re-issued numerous times over. The steady stream of crackling and popping was gone. For the purists, the digital media had fantastic sound, though it lacked the wholesome sound that vinyl could add. A special deluxe version was issued on CD, containing bonus material never known at the time. The classic album established itself in a new way for a new generation. But for us romantics, the vinyl days appeared to be gone for good. The days of pulling a giant black disc from its cardboard sleeve was left to the 'good old days'. That is until recent years saw a resurgence in vinyl sales. Vintage records are constantly being peddled over the internet. Newer artists are issuing new material on audiophile-grade vinyl. Phonographs are making a comeback. So it was inevitable that classic albums would return to the scene. And it is wonderful to have this great album back on vinyl. For beginners, the audiophile-grade vinyl is a plus. It is more rigid and lays flatter on a turntable. It is a high-quality print that allows the needle to ride smoothly across the disc. The digitally remastered sound was masterfully transcribed onto vinyl with a sound quality that is truly better than the original. The great part is that this master work now has the tonal textures that only vinyl can produce. Once more I'm in heaven. The drawback is purely the vinyl, itself. These new albums are considerably thicker and heavier than those produced in 1973. The album was originally released in the US by MCA Records. The trademark black label with its silver lettering and small strip of a rainbow peeling from the center of the album has been replaced by a solid yellow label with black lettering and piano keys lining the outside. The new album was released on the Mercury label. it took a bit away from the nostalgia of the classic. There is also the static electricity and dust gathering on the vinyl while playing. Sometimes it can cause a needle to unexpectedly skip. And it takes special skills and equipment to keep it dust-free. But this also adds to the flavor of the sound and the rebirth of memories. And with proper care, memories can be made and kept for many more years. I look forward to storing this classic album safely away, occasionally bringing it out to play, and preserving the sound for future generations that may know nothing of these great discs that were the forerunners of their digital media. Indeed, it is a well-preserved classic that is well worth the money.Read full review
