The story takes place in the 1950's and newlywed Dolly Magnuson is doing her best to be the perfect wife. She and her husband are new to the town of Pine Rapids. Dolly is also trying very hard to fit in with the local ladies quilting circle, which is a tight knit little group. It isn’t until their gossip turns to the old Victorian house on the hill that Dolly realizes not everything is innocent as it seems in this cozy little town. The old, abandoned house is rumoured to be cursed, but Dolly becomes so fascinated with the old home that she actually breaks inside and begins to lovingly clean and restore it to its former beauty. Then J.J. Mickelson returns, suddenly, back to his birth home. He is a handsome man but bitter and battling demons of his own. Dolly realizes the curse she has heard about may be all be too real. J.J. begins to tell Dolly his stories about his family’s history and the pain of his past, and in doing so he binds Dolly to his heart. For a first time author Ms. Baker sure knows how to spin a story! I won't give away the ending but it is a wonderful book set in a time when women had not quite come into their own. Dolly has the heart of a lion and the soul of an angel.Read full review
Ellen Baker's first novel, "Keeping the House", blends not only story lines for multiple characters, but also different times. It is surprising how well all of the narratives come together to culminate into a tale that reaches out to you and pulls you into the lives of the women who are so closely related, in spite of the fact that they are separated by time and distance. Though the beginning is a bit lengthy, the end feels somewhat rushed. The summary of all of the characters does leave us with a few questions. Overall, though, this is a first rate read. I'll look forward to reading the next literary effort from Ellen Baker.
