This is an outstanding and chilling performance of Christopher Marlowe's tragedy which undoubtedly created a stir back in the day. It is not for everyone given its blatantly homosexual content. But, it is tastefully presented in that there's no nudity and the acting is remarkable given the almost ceaseless tension throughout. Ian McKellen shines as always. The sets and costumes keep to the period without distracting viewers from the drama. This is a must for anyone interested in the Elizabethan theatre and in Shakespeare's greatest literary rival who sadly met his end at the age of 29

I saw this classic play televised on my local PBS affiliate when I was eleven years old --- it became the genesis of my lifetime interest in Elizabethean theater generally, and playwright Christopher Marlowe particularly. Decades later, I was happy to "bring it back home" for inclusion within a library collection it had truly inspired. King Edward II's relationship with Gaveston was also my initial exposure to homosexual love, and I'm gratified I experienced this tasteful passionate portrayal within historical context during childhood. For me, it artfully cemented the illegitimacy of society's sadly still prevailing prejudices.
I love Shakespeare and this was an awesome production!

I bought this as a gift and thought it was a movie but it turned out to be a play instead. And the play wasn't very good.
