This is not a typical diet book and not just another fad diet. This book is about how and why to make lifestyle changes not only for weight loss but for optimal health. It is based on over 20 years of clinical research and Dr. Ornish's findings are published in respected peer-reviewed journals (unlike Dr. Atkins and many others). Dr. Ornish's program has been endorsed by Medicare in certain states because it has been proven to reverse heart disease by actually clearing out the coronary arteries and lowering cholesterol---with the beneficial side effect of losing weight. Medicare would rather reimburse for inexpensive dietary & lifestyle changes than a 50-100K cardiac surgery. I am in no way affiliated with Dr.Ornish but I am an ER nurse and I witness everyday the havoc that is wreaked on people's bodies due to obesity, hypertension, and diabetes and I feel passionately about preventative health. On a personal note, I had been stuck in a weight loss plateau for several months even though I thought I was doing most of the right things. Since adhering to his recommendations for the last few months the weight has just been falling off me. I am also exercising more because I have more energy and I want to! There are no calories to count and absolutely no deprivation. It's more about making different, healthier choices. It's not about being thin, it's about being healthy.Read full review
There are many diet books for sale. Every celebrity seems to have their own book on weight loss. This book enjoys a good reputation from physicians and others in the nutrition profession. The premise? Eat more of the healthy low calorie foods THAT ARE FILLING. That pretty much sums it up. Eat smart, eat in moderation, exercise, monitor your results, adopt a healthy lifestyle. From my layperson's perspective, our bodies are like a car. They burn gas even when idling. They burn more gas when we run them hard and fast. When they burn fuel from the gas tank, the car gets lighter and lighter. If you put more fuel into the tank than what the car can use, well, that fuel spills over into a hidden storage tank in the trunk, adding more weight to the car. There you go... weight loss for those you like car analogies! Back to the book. It is easy to read and follow. It makes sense. It is affordable. It is worth the investment in money and time; if you commit to it.Read full review
My opinion is that this is just another diet book. My husband and I have lost over 100 pounds and I am so glad that we did it before reading this book as it wouldn't have helped us. We are also MAINTAINING our weight loss. I purchased this book thinking I would find some new recipes but I didn't care for most of them.

This book was educating in grounding my life style eating plan of how important a wpfb diet is in which this book is not.

I originally purchased this book because I had been told my Cholestorol was 227 and I wanted to reduce it without drugs. It certainly achieved that. I got it down to 180 within three months without medication. I also lost weight and really enjoyed the new lifestyle. The recipes are great and I was never hungry or felt deprived. Dr Ornish approaches your life in a wholistic way and has some useful suggestions for keeping your motivation high. I have now bought several copies which I give to friends when they tell me their cholestorol is high.
