I bought this DVD as part of my research into Sax Rohmer and the oriental villain, in the course of which I was looking at the screen vamp, and therefore at the actress Pola Negri. Negri plays an Egyptian woman captured by an evil tomb guardian, played by Emil Jannings in 'blackface'. Her role is to spook travellors by blinking into the eyes of the Mummy mask. Rescued and educated in Western manners, she rejects her European dress for her old Egyptian costume, stirred by the playing of an Egyptian melody, she performs a demure belly dance, to the stunned admiration of all the male guests. Later in the film she re- encounters the evil tomb guardian who mutilates her portrait, subjects her to hypnosis and causes her death.A fascinating film. The early work of Lubitsch, evoking the curse of the Pharoahs and the fascination of the period(1922) with all things Egyptian. I would purchase this item again. The title suggests a horror film, but this promise is not fulfilled. The horror lies in the idea of the curse, and not in the effects. It would now be considered offensive for its representation of racial difference. An early venture into the stuff of later horror films.Read full review
for the folks who enjoy the universal and hammer films of the mummy his film will complement them. i has a much more pausable plot and does not strey into sience fiction. the story is good and acting above average. i would recommend it those who can appreciate what the mummy myth originaed from.
