erasure have done a number of truly acoustic tracks over the years, generally tucked away as b-sides to various singles, etc. and most of those have been fantastic. the problem with "union street" is that while commonly portrayed as an "acoustic" album, that's not really accurate. the songs are performed with a live band, but performed too often in a country music style that feels forced and false. there's no faulting the musicianship, nor andy's vocal performances, but from the sense of "country music role playing" to the bizarre choice of tracks, it's more of an oddity than even remotely essential. i adore erasure, and even adore most of these songs in their original forms - but a stripped-down, truly-acoustic album, with a broader sampling from the band's career would have been more welcome. if you find the curiosity too great, then by all means, check it out. it's not money wasted, but it's no work of genius, as some might lead you to believe. more interesting, perhaps, is the later-issued live recordings from the tour, "erasure - on the road to nashville." it features a live recording of the concert, as well as a dvd of the complete show and some behind-the-scenes footage. then set about finding the various single that have features a more interesting cross-section of truly acoustic erasure performances - with just andy's voice and vince on acoustic guitar. happy hunting!Read full review
This CD is great. Especially the first song 'Boy'. This CD brings out Andy's voice to the limit. Union Street also shows how brilliant of a musician Vince Clark is. It also brings out the versatility in Erasure. It is good from start to finish. If you're an Erasure fan, then buy this CD now.
After buying most Erasure cds and reading about Union Street I decided to buy it. Since the cd is reworking not very well know songs from previous albums I wasn't sure how cool and totally current sounding the new music was- very pleasant surprise!
This is a must have for all Erasure fans. The "acoustified" versions of these classic Bell/Clark songs are wonderful. Destined to be a classic!
