This is one of those anime that doesn't really fit in anything... It's it a romanance? a comedy? horror? scifi? tenchi-harem fan service romp? I am sure someone will put this puppy in its place, some day. Anyway, here's my review - this is for the entire show, fyi: The Good: Visually speaking, this is one of the better one. well draw anime with lots of details (of what, I will not say - but mostly the red stuff.) The story itself seem to be a slasher from the begin with a lot of fan services.. However, if you finished the show, you will begin to think this point... what is it that make us human? Does some people willing to forget their humanity just for their own selfish needs? I must say this one had a lot of similar points with gunslinger girls.... another sad anime. (although elfin song is a bit happier ending...) The bad: The gore factor WILL turn off many people. Also, I do not consider this not a real fan service show.. Nudity is high on this anime, but its what I considered them as artistic showing - they are used as an extension of the characters and they move the show along. Yep, All those ADV regulars are dubbing this puppy... Hilary Haag, Kira Black and others vets are here, but the dub was kinda bad.. curiously, the Japanese dubbing also pretty sad... very curious indeed. The Ugly: THIS SHOW SHOULD NOT BE SHOWN TO ANYONE UNDER 15 under normal circumstance. This is really an college level show - especially ppl who is into humanities studies or literure. The conclusion: Elfen lied is really a special anime. I haven't seen any anime try to touch all bases like this one - and this one acutally works. Although I must still say this anime isn't for everyone.Read full review
I should let everyone know that Elfen Lied is one of my favorite series, the other being Fullmetal Alchemist. Elfen Lied is a truely amazing story in itself. It isn't based on manga that I know of and I think that is for the best that they havn't made a manga series for it because the anime is so good! The story includes love stories, a little bit of comedy (depending on your sense of humor. I found it extremely funny in parts). But the comedy is not the main focus of the series. The series, by the way, is 13 episodes long so it's an excellent series to watch in between some 26ers or longer series. The characters are all very well developed over the course of the 13 episodes and the plot is revealed at a steady pace which I found to be perfect. You are given just enough information about the story to keep you interested and wanting more, but not inundated by un-needed and unnecessary information. Elfen Lied focuses on a mature audience, as it contains nudity and extreme violence and gore. However, these characteristics are needed for the view to understand the seriousness of the situations in which the characters are involved. The gore didn't bother me much, however, I'm concerned that it may bother a female audience if they aren't into. However, if you can get by the violence, the story is a truely amazing experience to watch. I got surprisingly attached to the characters during the length of the series and the end made me tear up a bit, which I don't normally do while watching films. Although I have done this more frequently with anime. The characters are deeply involved in the plot and this series is definately not one to watch lightly or while doing something else. There is an incredible amount of symbolism between the characters and what they do. If you've seen the series, the clock is connected to the plot in many different ways and a person could argue the importance and the connections in many different ways. The art of Elfen Lied is very well done and I enjoyed every minutes of it. The opening heme song is actually in Latin and, as I found out after I had watched the series, taken from the bible. However, I do not remember many religious situations or connections. The translation of the opening and closing songs switch off between Latin/Japanese and English. The words in English are very well chosen to connect with the plot and the story of the series. The opening animation is very interesting in itself in that it uses a piece of art work titled "The Kiss" by Klimt. The imagery of the opening (and closing) animations and the music work together very beautifully. Overall, I highly recommend this series to any anime fan (and even to those who aren't...yet)! I got my friend into the series with only the first disk! So if you want a really good anime series with a lot of emotional and psychological aspects to it, definatley pick this series up right away...don't hesitate. I assure you, it's worth every penny! However, as noted above, this series does include intense violence and gore. In which case, this is NOT for the kids. It's rated 17+ but I t think it would be fine for a 16+ age group. However, this series does correspond with and "R" rating of a motion picture. Now, go out and buy this series and watch it as soon as you can! You won't regret it!Read full review

Notorious for being one of the most violent and gory anime series, I have found that people either love or hate it. I found the whole series to be extremely well done. Humor and romance sneak in just enough to take the edge off the blood and dismemberment. I was hooked from the start. 5 Stars.
