This is the current US Military shovel and it meets the criterion of what the military was looking for in reducing the size which was created by the wooden handle of the older M-1951 shovels. It did this but two things to watch for. It can BITE when you finger gets too close to the spring loaded handle. Second is that while better functionally with the grip handle you can't very well use it as a weapon on last resort. L.P. Young Author of Into the Blue Uniform. Volume 4 (next year) will discuss all of the field equipment of the USAF

You can't go wrong with the official us army tri fold entrenching tool. Lots of uses...shovel pick seat prybar axe frying pan and lots more I haven't thought of. Cheap reliable and sturdy. Make sure you buy the official us army one made by ames or acemco. Most of the knock offs are flimsy junk and will not take abuse. Cheap enough to throw one in each car for emergencies. I use mine for metal detecting and gardening. Love it. One of my favorite tools. Good for self defense without looking like a gangster!

I read the reviews on other less expensive shovels on eBay, and most folks were disappointed. This shovel costs a bit more but that's because it is a quality product. Mine came in very good condition with only minimal signs of use. I keep this shovel in my popup camper now and it's a very valuable tool to have with me while camping.

The grand kids loved this tool and even carry one in mom's jeep for unplanned digs. Good product at a bargain.

I bought two of these in surplus and they work very well. Easy take along when needed.
