I bought the Dyson DC16 based on the Dyson reputation. I suppose I thought it would have much greater suction than it does. Compared to the DC31 the DC19 is a 98 pound weakling and not much more powerful than other battery powered hand held vacs that are a fraction of the cost. On the other hand it seems well made and has a generally good feel to it. The canister opens easily for dumping refuse and it's no problem to clean the filters. If the battery lasted longer than 6 minutes I think the ergonomics would make it uncomfortable to use but for quick jobs it seems fine to me. Six minutes seems reasonable enough for the kind of cleaning that I bought it for. If I had it to do again I'd probably go with a cheaper hand held or spring the couple hundred bucks (!) for the DC31 which sounds like a jet engine when you pull the trigger and seems to generate considerable suction.Read full review
a) It's a great vacuum. It fills the niche that I was hoping it would fill perfectly: I want to vacuum something small or far away from an outlet, and I don't feel like fetching and plugging in the upright. Suction is great, the tools are great, the canister is great, etc. 5 out of 5 stars for the vacuum. (b) The battery life is ridiculous. I got 5 minutes of hard vacuuming. The way the charger is designed, it wouldn't even be that easy to keep a spare battery, because the actual charging contacts are on the handheld itself. Come on, Dyson, lithium batteries aren't even that heavy! You could have doubled the power with no problem. You could have designed a backup charger like all the cordless power tools have. 0 out of 5 stars for battery/charger design. I give it 4 stars overall, despite the battery issue, because I don't ever plan on using this thing for big cleaning jobs. If it's bigger than a 5 minute job, I'll just use the upright anyway. As a light, effective portable that's easy to grab for a specific job, this vacuum is very good.Read full review
I bought this hand held vacuum solely on the Dyson name. Having only heard raves regarding the stand-up models, I took a chance. This was a gift, but I have had the chance to use it also. What I like about the product is it really picks up anything and everything in its path. For small jobs or tight corners hard to reach spots it is great. One dislike which kept me from rating it excellent is the run time is only about 6 minutes while charging is around 3 hours. Also the directions are in a word Stupid. They could have elaborated a little when describing what the lights are supposed to look like. All in all it does what it sets out to do, and here or there it is perfect, but if you have the intentions of doing a whole house top to bottom cleaning of hard to reach areas, it would probably take 3 days.Read full review
I absolutely love the Dyson DC-16. It's ultra-lightweight, and it's nice to still have the power of a Dyson in a handheld, cordless vacuum. It's amazingly strong considering how little it is, and works great. I love how convenient and portable it is, and have already used it to clean out my car and pick up loose dirt around the house. The only major downside is that it takes 3 hours to regain a full charge, and only runs for six minutes. You would think that for such an expensive, high-tech vacuum, it would be able to run for longer (my inexpensive cordless vacuum lasts longer and charges in half the time). So for what you're paying, I would think it should be able to run for a longer period of time. Another minor issue is that you have to hold the button down the entire time to keep it running; it's not like a standard corded vacuum that you push a button to turn it off. Otherwise, this is a great product that I would definitely recommend to anyone. It's lightweight, powerful and convenient.Read full review
I like Dyson products in general but in my opinion are not worth the high prices you pay in stores. I like the Dyson DC16 handheld as it does as good a job as you could expect from a handheld but be prepared to expect that a fully charged battery will only last 5 to 6 minutes before the unit powers off due to the battery being exhausted. I paid less than $50 for this unit on Ebay which is, I think, a good price, but I would recommend you never buy one from a retailer because these things for for around $150 and not worth that much. I was going to buy a spare battery from Dyson but the battery alone sells for $79! Ouch! I highly recommend the Dyson if you can accept the short battery life and the extra weight of the unit.
