If you're still working in old copper plant then you still need a good quality meter to get the job done. The 965DSP is still the boss in this environment. It doesn't have to be this version. A version 5 or 6 will suffice. The version 7 has a bit more flexibility in the ranging of the TDR. The only other importance of the version is they type of FED you're using. I use the FED2 which requires the later version Dynatel. How does it compare to other meters? The JDSU HST3000 is probably the most popular copper testing meter today. 3M stopped building the Dynatel 965 series a few years ago. There is support for repairs from a number of independent shops. JDSU continues building the HST3000 under a new corporate name. I use both meters. The Dynatel can not be easily updated. So decide which version best suites your needs. The HST3000 can be updated via an internet connection. Given the HST3000s advantages in DSL testing the question comes up why bother keeping the old DSP in the truck? Some of the reasons for keeping it are similar to why you keep a favorite pair of loafers in your closet. It's familiar and comfortable to use. It is faster than the HST3000 and requires fewer buttons to get the job done. Speed aside it is still the results of the test that takes on the most importance. This is where the old Dynatel absolutely kills the HST3000. Both meters will get you close to the problem. Let's say I'm testing a 78,000' loop which isn't unusual in my area. The problem is a ring ground. The RFL function of both meters will get me close to the problem on the initial test. But the HST3000 may tell me the fault is 28,150' while the Dynatel says 28,480'. On the first test that is close enough. As I focus in on the shorter loop within that range the test results shouldn't vary. But they do. And my Dynatel is always more accurate than my HST3000. The same applies to looking for open conductors. A nod is given to the HST3000 when using the TDR. I've never used a more accurate TDR than the JDSU meter. But I'm working mostly in loaded rural cable. The TDR can't see past a load with either meter. The accuracy of the open meter portion of the tester is more important to me. They Dynatel allows me to set specific parameters that the JDSU does not. The Dynatel wins this contest. While I was not privy to how these companies did their field testing I can say that someone from 3M must have taken their meter outside and had some plant techs try it out. The 965DSP is well balanced and the test leads are on the bottom. The HST3000 is top heavy and has the leads coming out the top. The Dynatel has a well designed case for working outdoors. The HST3000 has a case perfect for working indoors with a flat surface readily available. That's not my world. I'm close to retirement so the Dynatel and I will probably sail off into the sunset together. The younger techs will be using the HST3000 or some equivalent until copper fades away like this old tech eventually will. That's not a bad thing by any means. If you're only carrying one meter on the truck then the HST3000 is a mighty fine tool to have. Personally I'm still happy to have the Dynatel. I'm no Don McCarty but I still get a lot of work done with this meter.Read full review

I am extremely familiar with this meter and there are none better. It measures noise, opens, shorts ect. extremely well. It is Gods gift to the phone man. There are later models but really do not work as well and are not as user friendly. I have bought several in case one breaks. In fact I will be using one today on a problem the phone company could not figure out. Trust the meter and use it for everything. They are like new as most phone people barely used them. You can draw your own conclusions from that. All IT people should have one, you can even set levels with it so radio people should have one also.
Although most telephone techs prefer the Sidekick, I think the Dynatel provides much more information and is easier to diagnose line quality problems. This tester will answer all the questions about line quality as well as the condition of the line. I highly recommend this tester. I am completely satisfied with this transaction.
