For novices and for those who don't use a dutch oven day in & day out, this is probably the best book I could recommend. It is a MUST if you are in Boy Scouts and plan to cook for troop or patrol. The first 40 pages are dedicated to the "how-to's" of the dutch oven, from beginning to end. Most other books go quickly over a few basics and then right into a collection of recipes. This is also the first book I have run across which doesn't assume that all dutch ovens are made of iron. (Although I also prefer iron over aluminum, the author does address the care and feeding of aluminum as well as cast iron.) If you study the advice in the first part of the book you will be well on your way to avoiding the pitfalls many of us have made when starting out, and the remainder of the book contains lots of simple recipes you can use in the out-doors. (Most other books rely heavily on more complex recipes which require home or commercial kitchens to prepare, chill, freeze, or otherwise "bend, spindle, or mutilate" prior to cooking the food.) Over-all, this book is well worth the price and you will find it is a useful part of your library.Read full review
The first half of the book will teach you how to cook with a Dutch oven and the tools to use. Recipes are okay, but if you master the techniques, you can make any casserole or meal in it, that you might cook in your home kitchen. The Author writes clearly and makes the subject easy. I always share this book with friends that I am teaching to cook.

Why have we forgotten the fantastic smell and taste of foods cooked in Dutch Ovens. With all the "fancy" ovens, microwave, convection, radiant, have we forgotten the true cooking done with "simple" ovens? A little space a little safety and a little knowledge and we all could be enjoying food prepared much better than we have become accustomed to. How much have we lost by accepting, "Good enough?" , I remember Grandpa and Grandma cooking with what I thought were simple pots, and the food smelled so good ...and it was and I remember it to this this along with the time spent helping. This cookbook imparts the feelings and fun of cooking with Dutch Ovens, learn a little, enjoy a lot. It's fun too!
The recipies in this book are not good. A waste of money. No secrets here
