If you have a Drinkwell mini fountain you really must have the filters and change them often according to the type of water you have. If you have a water softener the fountain quickly develops a slimey feel to it within just a few days. The filters extend that to a week, maybe a little more but without them the fountain gets slimey within a day or two. In addition, buying filters in multiples allows you to replace them as often as you need without having to try and rinse them out. Part of the ownership of a fountain of any kind is committing to the ongoing purchase of filters. Even if you use filtered or purified water you need filters and if you plan ahead you can find the filters

The filters seem to be of good quality and have an ample amount of activated charcoal to filter water. I like the way each filter comes in a sealed small plastic bag.

The water must taste very good because when I change the filter (often), we have a line at the waterer!

Original Drinkwell filters are much better than the cheap knock-offs out there. Well worth the extra $$ they cost. Superior quality and they last longer and fit better in the PetSafe water bowls.
