I am not in the habit of reading huge books like this but it has been well worth the time. I watched Outlander on Starz and got hooked. Since books are always better than the movies that are made from them, I started on this adventure with Claire and Jamie. I plan to read the whole series now. The character development is amazing! You begin to feel like these characters are your friends and become invested in the story. I love historical fiction so this series is the perfect fit for me.

This is an outstanding book, second in a series of (currently) six books, but the author has more to come. If you like historical fiction, this is a MUST read! Please start with the first book, "Outlander." While this book (and series) definitely has some romantic elements, this goes way beyond the romance genre, with expertly researched history, time travel, war, betrayal, intrigue, and medicine. On top of that, the main characters are so expertly crafted that you will feel as if they've been sitting at your kitchen tablem telling their story themselves. Very intelligently written, by a master storyteller Diana Gabaldon. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Well, since just finishing the first book, Outlander, I can't tell you how excited I was to get this, the second in the series. I delved into it immediately and have to say that I was pretty dissappointed at the start, realizing that the story starts 20 years after Outlander ended. However, after about 83 pages, BAM! There I was, back in the 1700's with Claire and Jamie. It looks like everything is going to be filled in, both in the modern time as well as flashbacks explaining what has happened in the last 20 years. For anyone who has not read the series, please start with Outlander. It is without a doubt one of the most interesting, lovely books I've read in quite a long time. This second book looks to me to be following suit.
This is book 2 in the "Outlander" series. My husband and I both absolutely love the entire series! It's a pet peeve of mine that it is often classified as "romance." In my opinion, this is historical fiction at its finest. Plenty of (hot, hot, hot!) romantic encounters, but in no way is it as inane as a romance novel. By the way, the "review" by "friendlycatt" (below) is NOT about the content of this book (which s/he readily admits s/he didn't even bother to read)! It is a complaint about the eBay seller from whom s/he bought it.
I've been reading this series for over 20 years. I loaned my copy of this book to a a friend of a friend and had to replace it. This is the 5th time I've read this book. Diana Gabaldon is the best. It just doesn't get any better than this book/series.
