I had received this game years ago as a present from a friend from elementary school when it came out, then ended up losing it to another friend later on. I loved the music that accompanied each level and how the story just kind of revealed itself. The intro allows you to decide whether to continue the game on challenging mode or easy mode all depending on how the first act goes. Typical of all vertical space shooters, this has the feel of a fantasy world as the dragon itself with unique power ups and energy icons throughout each stage. I've missed this game for years and now it's mine once again!

This game is one of my favorite spaceship-type shooters. It's a vertical-scrolling shooter with a fantasy setting, and probably the best part is that you're a DRAGON! This game was also released on the Turbografx 16 with better graphics and sound quality, but I prefer the nintendo version over the Turbografx 16 version because there are more powerups, added cutscenes, and (in my opinion) better levels and gameplay overall. Although you can get the T16 version on Wii virtual console for five or six dollars, you could probably get Dragon Spirit for the NES for even less on ebay. The gameplay is typical for the genre, meaning you fly around shooting fireballs at incoming enemies whilst avoiding their returning fire. In addition to this you are given a ground bomb that eliminates non-airborne enemies on the ground (which is a blast!) Powerups include speed increases, larger fireballs, rapid fire mode, spread shot, and others, but the coolest is the one that gives you extra heads. There's just something awesome about controlling a three-headed dragon that never gets old. Maybe it's the Godzilla fan in me. It's also one of the easier shooters I've ever played, too. If you're new to the genre this could be a good introductory game. This isn't to say that it doesn't get extremely difficult down the road, though. Anyway, my advice is to look it up on youtube. If you think it looks cool, I say buy it.Read full review
Dragon Spirit: The New Legend is a Vertical Scrolling Shoot 'em Up (SHMUP): little bit remake, a little bit sequel, all awesome. It takes place after the arcade classic, Dragon Spirit; the player assumes the role of Lace, son of Amru from the original Dragon Spirit. His goal is to save maidens, rescue his twin sister, and destroy the evil threatening the world. The game consists of nine levels from volcanoes, to jungles, to the seas; several fun bosses, and two playing modes. During the prologue of the game, if the player succeeds in defeating the boss you may play in 'Blue Dragon' mode; which is harder but rewards the player with the true ending. If the player dies during the prologue, you play in 'Gold Dragon' mode, which is much easier and gives you the fake ending. The power ups are pretty sweet, these consist of adding a 'head' to the dragon (add more fire power), increasing attack power (kill enemies faster), increasing speed, becoming invincible, or causing earthquakes to destroy enemies on the ground; among a few others. Very addicting, very fun, pretty graphics, nice music, and has a good level of challenge. One of the best Shoot 'em Ups on the NES, a must buy.Read full review
This game one hell of a reason for me to stay indoors in the spring growing up. This can be a gamer nirvana or absolute nightmare that you actually wouldn't mind revisiting over and over. Some Nintendo games are known for there challenge and some are known for bad programming. Luckily the challenge you will find with this game is far from bad programming. If you fail several times, its user error. Once you get the hang of the patterns this game can be one very smooth side scrolling shooter. The musical score is superb in comparison to most Nintendo Games. Right of the bat, if you die in the first level you get an alternate character to play as for the rest of the game. I liked that aspect, with that being said it is worth it to not die in the first level. You will get a far better character and the game will be sweet. 50 years from now ill probably be playing this game in the nursing home with my HD800s on not to wake up my roommates. Check out my Nostalgic Video Game Store for more classics like this.Read full review
