The Dragon Ball Z movies are typically one shot stories that have little relation to the Anime series. They do often reflect upon the series, but are not cannon. The Tree of Might takes place (chronologically) between the preliminary battles on Namek and Goku's battle with Frieza. Therefor Goku has not yet become a Super Saiyan. It basically tells a story in which Vegeta and Nappa never came to Earth. It begins with the Z fighters and friends relaxing in the wilderness. A mysterious probe crash lands nearby and starts a fire that burns down the forest. They collect the Dragon Balls in a matter of days. The crew wish Shenron to restore the forest, only for it to be destroyed by the Tree of Might; a tree that's fruit was intended only for the Eternal Dragon. As it turns out, the probe was sent to survey Earth so that the evil Saiyan Turles could plant the ominous tree. The Tree rapidly absorbs all the nutrients from the Earth and causes massive destruction to Earth's cities. King Kai alerts our hero Goku of the terrible devastation, and the Earth's untimely demise. Goku and the Z fighters are the planets last line of defense. Will they be able to prevent Turles from eating the fruit and becoming the most powerful being in the Universe? Lord Slug, which takes place roughly within the same period, tells the story of an ancient Namekian called Lord Slug. The evil Namekian is one of few Super Nameks who were banished from their home world thousands of years ago. Lord Slug and his minions make their way to Earth with the intention of freezing the planet and killing all inhabitants. Attempting to do so after collecting all 7 Dragon Balls and wishes for eternal youth. This film also, very subtly, suggests Goku will become a Super Saiyan. This form, being called the "False Super Saiyan" shows a few characteristics of the SSJ form. Instead of his hair becoming gold and eyes that turn green, Goku's hair stands on end and his eyes become entirely white, while maintaining a sort of constant Kaio-Ken technique. With only Goku, Gohan, Krillin and Piccolo to protect the Earth for certain doom, will they be able to defeat the newly rejuvenated Super Namekian?Read full review
I wish they had a blu-ray steelbook version but otherwise it's a great set of classic DBZ movies!

The Tree of Might has an excellent story line. I am not exactly sure why Goku has a look alike foe, but the film is definitely action packed! Lord Slug has sweet music from Deftones and Disturbed that lines up with Goku going Kao Ken, which is very exciting! Probably some of the coolest fight scenes. Beginning of Lord Slug is slightly cheesy when Gohan is playing with Ickaris, but for the most part these films can be enjoyed from age 8 on up.
The Dragon Ball Z movies are definitely better than the series. The creators would receive a larger budget for them therefore obviously making a better experience. They characters have a lot more movement about them and the fight scenes have more actions to them, rather than the same movements repeated. You are probably better off watching the entire series first, as it is hard to judge where the movies take place.
Awesome DVD came super fast and unopened and saved me 15.00. DVD is in perfect condion I really have enjoyed this dvd and plan on buying the next dbz double feature from him....
