One of the things to remember when watching Donnie Brasco is that it based on a true story. That is, the events really happened. This a good look at the everyday workings of the Mafia, not by the top echelon of Bosses and Capos, but by the lower level, those "soldiers" just carrying out their jobs. The acting is great, especially the interaction between Al Pacino and Johnny Depp, as Johnny's character Donnie Brasco gets sucked in to mob life, even as he is an undercover cop trying to bust these people. A well made movie and I give it five stars.

Pretty intense movie about an FBI agent, Joe Pistone, who goes undercover to infiltrate the New York mob. He goes under as Donnie Brasco (Johnny Depp), a sometimes jeweler. He makes a friend of notorious hit man Lefty Ruggiero by helping him collect on a debt stemming from a fake ring that he took in lieu of cash, supposedly worth more than $6000. Ruggiero (Al Pacino) openly admits to Donny that after more than twenty years in the life, and after twenty-six hits, he still has to make his weekly "Bic", payment to the boss, or he is in big trouble. As a wiseguy, if you don't earn you can end up dead. For his help with the debt, Ruggiero introduces Donny as a "friend of his". This means that he is now connected to Ruggiero. His foot is in the door. This relationship grows until he is not only a friend of Ruggiero, but an associate to the crew, and finally, during a trip to Florida, Donny is introduced to Santo Trafficante, as an "Associate of Ours" by the boss. This is the final step. You can't get any deeper. This process has taken two years and his wife is at her wits end. Donny's wife, Anne Heche, is practically ready for a divorce. From being in so deep for so long, he is starting to act just like the gangsters, hot headed, quick tempered, etc. When it all comes to a head, Donnie tries to get Lefty to split with money that Donny kept when their Florida deal got busted. Lefty is now suspicious of Donny and from what I understood, Donny might have been close to getting "clipped". The undercover operation ends and lots of inditements are handed down. This is a true story. Johnny Depp is a capable actor. His talents are wide ranging. Al Pacino adds a serious element to his character as well. This crime drama is worth watching.Read full review
Set shortly after the construction of the Verrazano Bridge this master piece of method acting shows what happens when you connect two previously isolated worlds. Staten Island meets Brooklyn, the FBI greets the Italians. Symbolism abound, I recommend this flick to any fan of the occult.
