This was my second book by Donald Gazzaniga. I had to have it after I bought his baking book and it is such a pleasure to have, to read and to use. Since buying this book, I have become much better acquainted with herbs and spices, because he uses a lot of them, and writes informationally and with humor about them and other aspects of cooking. His books are fun to read, and then you also have fabulous dishes to eat. Salad dressings are so tasty. Try the chili corn chowder. Fabulous! And bruschetta. Yum! There's lots of hints, tips and descriptions of ingredients and foods. Much to learn. Much to enjoy. I'm growing a garden this year, partially due to DG. I realized that it would be nice to have some of these fresh ingredients right out in my yard. Along with corn, tomatoes, artichokes and squash, I'm growing cilantro and basil and onions. My dad recently had his gallbladder removed and was told to change to a low sodium, low saturated/trans fat, low sugar diet since it would be harder on his body to digest certain foods. This book is great for someone like him who needs to alter their eating lifestyle but doesn't know where to start. One of the best things about this book is that there are easy low salt delicious soups and, if you've ever checked the sodium on the back of canned soups in the store, then you know how salty and unwholesome those soups can be. The recipes are especially well-suited for lunch ideas (lots of interesting sandwiches)and each recipe includes a nutritional breakdown including the amount of calories and fat!!!
This Nice Cookbook has easy-to-follow recipes and lots of them! I purchased it for a older neighbor that had open heart surgery and is now following a severely reduced sodium diet! He's cooking at home now instead of eating out all the time so he can control the amount of salt in his food. The recipes are clear and simple, but there are no photos. It's a great cookbook for the beginner!
