If you've seen any Ben Stiller movie - this isn't much different. Same faces (Vince Vaughan, Christine Taylor, etc). Same kind of humor (slapstick, blunt, sarcastic, stupid). And equally funny. Dodgeball opened to mixed reviews among fans of this kind of movie - most loved it, but some found it utterly stupid... well hello - its a comedy about a dodgeball league... of course its stupid! And thats why its entertaining and great. In all honest - Vince Vaughan et al have done better work - but there are tons of laughs in this and its a great 90 minutes.
Peter LaFleur is a charismatic underachiever and proprietor of a rundown gym called Average Joe's. The facility's ecclectic clientele of decidedly less-than-average Joes is comprised of: a self-styled pirate; a scrawny nerd who dreams of impressing an unattainable cheerleader; an obsessive aficionado of obscure sports; a dim-witted young man; and a cocky know-it-all who, of course, really knows nothing. Peter's humble gym catches the eye of White Goodman, the power-mullet-sporting, Fu-Manchu-d, egomaniacal owner of Globo Gym, a gleaming monolith of fitness. White intends to take over Average Joe's, and Peter's non-existent bookkeeping is making it all too easy for him. A foreclosing bank has stationed attorney Kate Veatch inside Average Joe's to finalize Globo's takeover of the gym. But Peter's boyish charms win her over and Kate joins his team of social rejects to beat the odds, and their own ineptitude,to try to save Average Joe's. By having a showdown dodgeball competition against Globo Gym. From the supporting cast and the cameo's everyone does a top notch job. It's stupid, sure, but it's so hilarious, you don't care. I could not stop laughing. There are so many jokes in this movie, you don't even have a chance to rest before the next one comes along. This is a comedy, a comedy meant to entertain.Read full review
Dodgeball...always has been a kinda offbeat dorky game....and indeed maybe the game of underdogs...but can these particular underdogs overcome this to become champions...well , this we will see in this funny entertaining movie featuring the likes of Vince Vaughn - who is quickly becoming a master at these silly, quirky comedy collections - think Old School and the Wedding Crashers; also Ben Stiller, his wife Christine Taylor, Rip Torn and even a cameo from Lance Armstrong!! Vince Vaughn owns a gym - Average Joe's - that is neither successful at improving bodies or indeed making money; and this would continue this way until Vaughn finds he is near bankruptcy and facing closure - the only way he can save the gym is to make enough money to pay off his debts, and save for a very funny and unsuccessful attempt at car washing for payment - the only other alternative is to enter and win the World DodgeBall championships. Something Vaughn and his band of merry geeks know nothing about! He also has to compete against arch enemy White Goodman - played by Stiller, who owns a gym empire and plans to take over Average Joes. White is a slimy bully with an ego tht exceeds the size of his gymnasium empire: Stiller has to be commended on creating such a character through his acting! Both men have teams in the Dodgeball competition, so it does not take a genius to figure out that somehow they will both make it through to the finals in which they end up competing for the title. Though that said, there are enough twists in the plot as well as humor to keep you thoroughly engaged - Jason Bateman also adds to the humor as the most ridiculous announcer for the televised version of the Dodgeball finals! This is a great movie with some absurd characters and over the top acting - which works well in relation to the genre of the film and general premise of the movie! It is ideal for fans of other similar offering such as Old School, Anchorman and 40 year old virgin; and has a well deserved place in our movie collection!Read full review
Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn are hilarious in this movie about a Dodgeball tournament in Las Vegas. Vince Vaughn has a team of unknown misfits going against Ben Stiller's top athletes, the typical "good guys vs bad guys" and let's cheer for the underdog movie. There are some very funny lines that you would have to see and hear to appreciate ie "You made me bleed my own blood." Yes, it can be stated as a dumb movie, but it is strictly enterainment and that's why we watch movies.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. It keeps you laughing throughout. The movie starts out with Peter (Vaughn) who owns Average Joe's gym, which is a bit decrepit. His gym has been losing clients since Globo Gym opened across the street. White Goodman (Stiller), who owns Globo Gym, tries taking over Average Joe's by hiring an attorney. The attorney tells Peter that if he doesn't pay $50,000 within 30 days that Average Joe's will be sold to White. The remaining clients of Average Joe's try to think of a way to raise $50,000 within the time limit, and they decide that they'll play in the Dodgeball Tournament which has a winning grand prize of $50,000. They also come across a man who is willing to coach them, Patches (Rip Torn), who isn't normal by any means. They also find out that Globo Gym is also in the Dodgeball Tournament, who they must beat in order to win the Tournament. The cast includes: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Alan Tudyk, Justin Long, and Rip Torn. It also has some cameos from: Chuck Norris, William Shatner, David Hasselhoff, and Lance Armstrong.Read full review
