Picking out a gift for someone who has entertainment tastes specific to the science fiction and fantasy genre can be tricky. It’s a broad genre with a big selection, and can seem quite mysterious to an untutored shopper. What’s good? What’s junk? One good recommendation for the science fiction fan in your life who needs a gift is the television series Doctor Who on DVD. The entire first season is available on DVD as a 5-disc set that holds 13 episodes. Doctor Who is a charming character who commands the United Kingdom-produced series. He is a Time Lord who travels space and time but tends to turn up in London more often than not. But the plots are never mundane. Some terrible alien or supernatural threat always threatens humanity with destruction or enslavement. Occasionally the very existence of the universe hangs in the balance. Fierce changelings, raging beasts, robot menaces such as the Cybermen and the Daleks routinely confront the Doctor – and lose. Bravery, intelligence, flippant humor, and fast-talking define the character of the Doctor, who has no known name besides “the Doctor.” Of course his time machine, the TARDIS, is a very complex piece of living machinery, but most of the Doctor’s technological feats tend to be accomplished by his all-purpose sonic screwdriver that looks like he ordered it from a late night infomercial. The Doctor displays the traits of a classic confidence man. His quick wit and unyielding sense of his own authority rapidly allow him to take over every situation that confronts him. Even when he is made a prisoner, which happens often, he submits to his captors cheerfully, secure in the knowledge that he will outwit them. His confidence game, however, is always for the good. He is not a swindler. He is honest and courageous and defends what is best and right. The newest version of Doctor Who has broad appeal and should be irresistible to all but the most hardcore and serious science fiction enthusiasts that are intolerant of frivolity. Creative scripts and fun characters drive every episode, and the special effects have been substantially improved upon from the old days. Men and women enjoy Doctor Who and it is suitable for older kids and adults, but tends to be a bit too scary for little ones.Read full review
