I originally bought the cd because I like Stephen Sondheim's music. Richard Rodgers, of course, is a very recognizable name in the world of musical theatre and I thought the combination would be intriguing at worst, fascinating at best. The songs are enchanting, light-hearted and smart; I was not disappointed. The opening song, "Someone Woke Up" is fun to listen to, engaging and very appealing. The rest of the songs fall on the same pattern. It is a shame that the final product was not a success on Broadway. I especially like the title song: "Do I hear a waltz? because it makes me feel it created a moment when everyone onstage was "in love", just like the character singing the song. All in all, the songs really work because of their charm as well their simple cleverness. They are also loaded with sincerity and earnest. I prefer musical theatre songs to be traditional instead of modern. There is no pop or rock here and that's also why the music works so well.Read full review
