Our current climate in America forgets that the first step is always the hardest. Overcome hatred is hard but you learn from history. Doing the right thing in desegregation of schools. That is a American story.

The move was very inspiring and showed the courage of an African-American family who trusted God to help them through seemingly impossible odds. This story may be hard for younger viewers to grasp fully, but to people who are older and grew up in the southern US, it accurately depicts the racial tensions in 1960s America. It shows me how far this nation has come since those days, but that is not to say we don't have a long way to go. There is still much hatred around. I saw the power of hatred in the movie as the crowds chanted racial epithets at Ruby. Instead of seeking revenge, she prayed for her persecutors.I especially liked how Dr. Coles, who himself exhibited some bigotry at first, later on really related to Ruby as a human being, not as a subject for his psychiatric case study, which was his original intent. I wish Dr. Coles or one of his colleagues had done some case studies on those hateful people who were yelling outside the school, as well as the teachers and administrators inside the school. They were much more in need of Dr.Coles' services than Ruby! I highly recommend this family-oriented movie. The acting was superb and the action moved along at a good pace. It left a great impact on me.Read full review
I purchased this video for my classroom because we were studying Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ruby Bridges. It's a good thing that I previewed this Disney Movie the night before becuase it is filled with very graphic racial slang throughout the entire video. Needless to say, I did not allow my children to watch it. But, it was a great movie that I will keep at home and it could be appropriate for children in middle school.

I wanted my second graders to see this movie during Black History Month. It told the story through the eyes of a first grade little girl. A true story which always brings it closer to home. They were truly inspired. I would highly reccomend this movie to, not only teachers to show in class, but for family viewing as well.
