THE perfect voice these song and their lyrics, talked just like he sang. What a loss. I can see him in the cotton patch or corn field singing these songs almost. The simplicity of the production and instrumentation for these songs is perfect. Not too little and not too lush.I'm a Band lover anyway but this cd hit the spot, roots type music at it's best,my opinion anyway.Perfect imperfections.

Rebounding from throat cancer is no small feat - but even more so if you were one of the lead singers of influential roots music cornerstones, The Band. But with the help of his daughter (also a lead singer, from the gospel band Ollebella) Levon Helm has put forth a beautiful set of old time (if nto, at least old timey) tunes about life, love, fear, redemption, lust and the sheer power of the spirit. That unmistakable and uncompromising voice, takes me back to another America. If you love old school country/country gospel, or just that flavor of the last living Voice of The Band, this album is for you. Put your feet up and enjoy.
This cd hasn't left my player since I opened it. Levon Helm has been creating some incredible music for decades but his latest work, Dirt Farmer, along with Electric Dirt are as good as anything he has ever done. Dirt Farmer is a wonderfully eclectic array of Blues, Country, Bluegrass, Americana, Folk and Rock n Roll. The song’s style and influence vary from track to track and each song is enhanced by incredible story telling. Helm underwent surgery for throat cancer and doctors said he would never sing again. Not only is he singing but he is tearing it up in his signature style along with daughter Amy and some help from his friends. The album is so raw and real and stripped down that it sounds unlike anything out there right now. The range in emotion throughout the album is polarizing and each listen uncovers a little something new. A classic release from a classic artist, Dirt Farmer is as organic as its title.Read full review
He and the Band are among my favorite artists since first hearing them in them in the early 70s. It’s good stuff.
