The screen is small and there isn't a custom page to put other info on. and where did the vertical profile go. it is hard to store and retrieve your trip. The battery life is better than before but it doesn't seem to be state of the art, and the topo 10 is missing a lot of trails. One should be able to interact with others that have hiked or rode public paths, or at least map your trips in 3D. I had the pn-20 and got a bike mount so I stayed with is, but my pn-40 would short out and drain my battery dead so I would lose my info and way back. I went back to my pn-20, but it would not use the new topo software. Most users may not find it user friendly, I think the pn-60 will be reliable and I may learn to use it in a few years. I wish it was really cool to use but difficult comes to mine. I don't know that others are a better value and the price has come down. best of luck and get some exercise. AlexRead full review

Dependable, Rugged, Watertight and Small GPS with Rechargeable or AA Batteries This review does not address the use of the companion Spot Satellite transponder. Also understand that I always have a paper topo map or chart appropriate to my trip at hand. My critical criteria are: Batteries and Battery Life: any GPS device for remote field use must function on a regular common battery type in addition to its rechargeable battery. The PN-60 will work on its rechargeable battery pack or if needed on a pair of common AA batteries. While lithium cells are recommended alkaline cells will work. The internal rechargeable battery pack is commonly used in other devices and available online and in camera stores. Dependable: the device must work when needed. The PN-60 has not failed me yet. Its rugged and water tight housing can take a lot of abuse. It can be tossed in a pack and abused by rain, impacts, and temperature; then when needed it works. Its accuracy is excellent. Its speed is fast. And its functions dependable. The unit and field accessories are small and field friendly where size and weight matter. Suitable for multiple applications: backpacking, trekking, canoeing, mountaineering, sailing, GEO caching, cycling, running, skiing, and more. For larger powered vehicles this unit is an acceptable man-portable backup. Biggest negatives: Small screen size: difficult for some people, longer battery life, harder to break. Battery life: easy of recharge and recharge options, AA battery option, car adapter, wall adapter, USB adapter, external worldwide charger for battery packs, more. Learning curve: this is a complex multi-function device you will need to invest some time to master it. Realize that most users will typically only use parts of its total functionality. Field Notes: having traveled and trekked in many a remote place (from mountainous US national parks, to the muddy jungles of SE Asia) having a rugged dependable device that works on common batteries is important.Read full review

Works well, just like my old one that broke. One small problem. The date reads 2002 and can't be changed. A firmware update might fix. Otherwise, great for geocaching. Connects easily to GSAK.

I upgraded to the PN-60 from the PN-20 (the older model is no longer supported by TOPO 9 software). I use this for hiking, cross country skiing, canoing & biking. Most of the time I just take this along, turn it on & put in a coat pocket. You can also download satellite images & view your location from a different prospective. After the trip, I download the track via USB cable into TOPO 9 program & view the route taken. You then see your route on a very detailed TOPO map where all sorts of profile data is then available such as moving averages, distance traveled, time moving/stopped etc. You can also pre-plan your trip by making a route on the map, setting way points & sync to the PN-60 so you can follow this route for hiking or back country skiing. Some people want to use Google maps on their cell phone if they are on an expensive 3G data plan instead, but most of the places I go have no cell coverage & you don't get much useful info anyway. I use rechargeable batteries, so there is minimal cost after your initial purchase. Great gadget for out door people!Read full review
The handheld GPS works well and integrates with the TOPO 8 software though the software is quirky, and Delorme no longer supports this device or software. You are still able to plan routes and transfer maps. The discrepancies are that the TOPO 8 maps do not include the Eastern US disc and the rechargeable battery is used and doesn't charge well. The automobile charger and USB connection work to charge the battery but the battery charge indicator on the satellite page doesn't reflect accurate charge status. Otherwise a dependable handheld GPS with compatibility with TOPO Quad maps.
