Chaim Potok weaves a story about a young girl named Ilana Davita Chandal whose mother was raised Jewish and her father Episcopalian, but who are now both Communists. Her father travels to Spain as a reporter during the Spanish Civil War, and also chronicles the beginnings of World War II. The story takes Ilana through many facets of communism, Judaism and Christianity, and how different family members' lives are affected by their choices. Chaim Potok typically writes about male Jewish figures, so this is a change for readers who enjoy his writing. It is one of my favorite novels by this Jewish author.
