It's true. I loved David's other books (How to make Horsepower and his cylinder head book) so much that I decided to venture out to the bowtie side to satisfy my appetite for engine building knowledge. Lots of good info that will apply to any engine here but it is very 350/383 heavy. There's overlap between the other books I listed, but plenty to make this worth reading for general tips and tricks.

Mr. Vizard takes a holistic approach to engine building. He emphasized the importance of torque vs horsepower and drives home how vital it is to ensure all the parts work well together. I'm using this book to build up a 383 vortec for my 96 gmc yukon - engine runs well, but has low oil pressure due to the PO not changing the oil - ever. (There was only 2 quarts in the engine). Mr. Vizards instruction has already saved me about $2000. This book is really focused on guys building engines in the garage for not a lot of money. I highly recommend the book!

After being a self taught drag racer in the early thru middle 60’s, my interest was rekindled in the 80’s. Most of what I was reading in hot Rod magazines was counter to my experience. I discovered this David Vizard book which not only matched up with my experiences, but went much further. If you want to build a first generation SBC, this book will help you understand how to put an economical combination of parts together that will give you way better than average power & longevity.
