Before the end of the school term, I purchased the film Dangerous Minds (for me)in an effort to stay focused on what really matters in teaching--the students. Yet, the film, starring Michelle Pfeiffer as LouAnne Johnson, a former U.S. Marine, spoke volumes to my students as well. Dangerous Minds, based on Ms. Johnson's My Posse Don't Do Homework, provided a real story replete with students in which my classes could identify. Being able to find movies, books, and other materials on Ebay has enhanced my teaching and helped me to reach a growing majority of students who are visual learners. I highly recommend this film to anyone who would like to learn more about the realities of what occurs in many high schools across the nation. If anything seemed to be missing it is the rampant use of drugs that we, as teachers, see too often in our own schools, rural and urban.Read full review
Wonderful Movie!! Michelle Pfeiffer at her best! Former Marine LouAnne Johnson leaves an officer's commission and a nine-year military career to pursue her dream of becoming an English teacher. But while earning her credentials at a Northern California high school, she is assigned to a group of students who change her life forever. And she changes theirs. Although each of her charges exhibits a seemingly inpenetrable facade, these kids are desperate to connect with someone who cares about them. As their new instructor, the feisty Ms. Johnson defies all the rules, creates her own curriculum and instructs this class of tough, inner-city teenagers from college-level texts. Frustrated that her students, whose standardized test scores range from average to excellent, have come to accept failure as a way of life, she cajoles and tricks them, even bribes them, into learning. More important, she loves them and helps them to believe in themselves, in their spirit and their potential.Read full review

This is ultimately a feel good movie with much humanity; one of those movies that you really ought to see.
Great movie, with what it really like for kids and teachers alike in poverty areas with gangs. That if one person cared enough to help make change it would help these young kids go on have a brighter future and life.

I saw this movie when it first came out; but watching it again all these years later makes it even more powerful. Each person kept your attention and made their character pop. This movie will tug at your heart strings.
