When I heard that Don Knotts had died all I could seem to find with him it is was the Andy Griffith Show. But, after looking a bit deeper for movies of his like "Mr. Limpet" and "The Ghost & Mr. Chicken" I found this dvd package. Since I couldn't find many of his movies to rent I thought I would just "nip it in the bud" and buy this set of dvd's, and I was not disapointed. I really like the "Ghost and Mr. Chicken", but the "Shakiest Gun in the West" was also a very pleasant suprise. I would reccomend this dvd set to anyone who enjoys Don Knotts on t.v., as well as other great movies he has been in, namely, "Pleasantville" which is one of my all time favorites. The only reason I could not give this set an excellent rating is because I thought that the Mr. Limpet movie should have been included, rather than one of the others, or with the others as well. A great actor and great movies know no time frame, and these will all last for generations to come.Read full review
I actually bought this for a friend as a surprise. We were reminiscing about movies one day and he happened to say that the 1 movie he would give his right arm for was Don Knotts and "The Ghost of Mr Chicken" but he and his wife had never been able to find it - he then gave a huge sigh, a small laugh & the moment was over. I, of course, came home and looked for this movie and voila! there it was on the "Don Knotts Reluctant Hero DVD". Having a personality that doesn't like being told "you won't find it" or "you can't buy it" immediately purchased it. The day it arrived I took it round to him at his shop, he knew right away and the look on his face? well!! Conversation went like this - "you haven't" - "haven't what" - "found it" - "found what" - "that movie" - "what movie" (small frown here) his mouth was hanging & I started looking for a small drool - handed him the parcel and said "here, I think this is yours" Can anyone reading this imagine a 6' bearded piece of string dancing around a large shop of 2nd hand furniture hugging a parcel? No? well you would have to to know his true reaction. I finally managed to pry this DVD away from him last week and watched "The ghost of Mr Chicken" I laughed so much I cried & could finally understand why they wanted to see it again. Don Knotts is a true legend. Anyone that has any doubts about buying this DVD, put the doubts aside and make the purchase - there are 4 movies to watch and I can guarantee you will watch every one of them and howl with laughter at all of them.Read full review
This set of Don Knotts films is truly one of the best comedy collections ever made. The Ghost & Mr. Chicken is one of my personal favorites about a smalltown newspaper employee, (Knotts), who tries to make a name for himself by staying in a haunted house for a night. In the process, a murder mystery unfolds and plenty of laughs along the way. The Reluctant Astronaut, The Shakiest Gun in the West and The Love God are all comedy classics as well. The Reluctant Astronaut finds Don Knotts as a amusement park employee who gets accepted into the space program. Seemingly a dream come true for Knotts or is it? Just the idea of Don Knotts as an astronaut makes me chuckle. As does the next film, The Shakiest Gun in the West, which casts Don Knotts as a dentist in the old west, who sets out on an epic journey across the United States. His nerves are tested once again by thieves, Indians and a sharp shooting wife. The Love God is about a magazine publisher that gets involved with the mob. The gangsters want to turn his family run magazine into something a little more raunchy. Knotts finds a way to save the magazine and his dignity. All-in-all, if you enjoy the comedy of Don Knotts, you'll enjoy these 4 films. Just goes to show that you don't need to use foul language to be funny.Read full review
