This is a great DVR for Dish Network. Very much like the higher priced vip722 except has a smaller hard drive. If you are someone who saves everything they record you can always add an external drive via usb port. The built in ATSC high definition tuner is a plus. I hooked up an antenna and got all the local OTA HD channels too. This is a great feature because Dish only gives the major local channels in DFW and leaves out PBS and others. Thanks to the built in tuner you get them all even if there is a heavy rain storm which can disrupt the dish signal. Satellite HD via Dish looks great too. I have the receiver hooked into my wireless network via a wi-fi bridge adapter. It was super easy to hook up and now I don't need to have it connected with one of those wireless telephone jack extenders. I actually bought 2 of these and they are great machines to have. 3/26/10 UPDATE: Several people have emailed me to ask about using the VIP622 with Wi-Fi so here goes: I have an Airlink 101 wireless adapter in my living room. It is attached to a 5 port switch. To that I have connected the VIP622 and a bluray player. The VIP doesn't have to be connected to a phone line if it is on the web and the bluray gets netflix off the web. The VIP can also be accessed via a computer or iphone to check your scheduled recordings etc. If you add slingbox you can also watch your recordings or live TV over the web while you are out of town. Pretty cool stuff and I originally just did it because I didn't have a phone line where my TV was located. On another note, these receivers are known by Dish to have problems with overheating so make sure you have plenty of air circulation or you will have problems. I have read on the web it is very easy to upgrade the hard drive if you want. Just have to be sure to get one the receiver will recognize. One of my two VIP622's had the hard drive go out last November. (That's when I found out about the possibility to upgrade the drive) My receiver was saying it had an error and to call Dish. They said they would send out a refurb unit right away. I reminded them I owned my receivers and they probably wouldn't just replace them for free. They tried to tell me they were lease units and I told them they were not and I had called Dish with the receiver ID numbers before purchasing them used off of eBay. After a few minutes they figured out I was right and updated my account to avoid future confusion. What they did next blew me away - They were going to send me a refurb unit for FREE anyway!! And I would own it, not lease it!! NOW THAT'S GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT YOU REALLY NEVER EXPECT TO HAPPEN. I was figuring I would just have to get a hard drive and fix it myself, instead Dish got a customer for life. I agree with another poster here; YOU MUST GET THE RECEIVER ID FROM THE SELLER AND CONFIRM THE STATUS OF IT WITH DISH. If you don't and you get scammed, it's your own fault. Always buy from a seller with exceptional feedback. That way they'll probably give your money back if something goes wrong. You should be OK though if you just check the receiver status with Dish. It only takes a few minutes and can save you a world of trouble. BY THE WAY THE COMMENT FROM RAYMOND ABOUT DISH RECEIVERS BEING WORTHLESS AFTER MARCH 3, 2010 IS NOTHING BUT A LIE. I'M WATCHING MINE RIGHT NOW!!Read full review
Been with dish for years and I'm happy with the service and programming but the 622's being sent out lately are....unfortunate to say the least. I'm on my third in as many months. the first two lasted for two or three years apiece. The latest, a couple weeks. The one before, a month or so. After some searching, I have learned that they are prone to overheating. This one is in a big cabinet with nothing on top of it and clearance of both sides and is plugged into a good surge protector. I specifically asked for new but it was a reman. The next one is coming. If it dies, maybe a switch to a 722 will be called for.
I've had several of these DVR's in the past and find them easy to operate. It features a great TV Guide with one button REC. I've upgraded recently to the 722 & 922 receivers and the existing external drives work fine. I have 2 of them. One for Movies and another for Specials and Concerts.
Had to hire someone to hook this up because it did not come with instructions. It cost me an extra $99 to have someone set it up and check everything was working and it does. So I am happy.

I might change this post if I get this issue resolved. But the unit that was sold to me can't be activated because the prior user has a balance owed and Dish won't activate the unit unless the balance is paid. Also, the buttons on the front of the unit don't work, and stay in "pressed" once you press them. I'm NOT happy at all! I have a completely USELESS unit and I've spent about 3 hours with the Dish people trying to get to the bottom of this!
