This books is excellent for the collector of 20th century Delft and Makkum wares. It provides excellent details on the numerous 20th century manufacturers of Delft pottery. With the exception of a few "flaws" in the details given on Royal Goedewaagen and Oud Delft, the book is a very good source for facts and information. Has a nice reference area for painters marks of Makkum, Harlingen, and De Porceleyne Fles. Also gives the reader a little bit of information on the early antique productions of Delft. Very easy to read and understand. Certainly a very good guide book for the POST-1900 Delft collector.
This is an awesome GENERAL overview of ALL that is Delfts. It includes historical information, factory differences, insights into what to look for regarding manufactors logos, artist signatures and the many different styles when looking at a piece of Delft artwork. There are many beautiful photos of Delftware products, including many museum quality pieces. The book is a great investment for anyone wanting to learn more about this very popular, collectible art. My only complaint that I have is the lack of depth that this book suffers from. The author, Stephen J. Van Hook presents each different aspect of the different Delft styles, with expertise and apparent in-depth research, only to leave the reader wanting for more. As a general overview, one that the novice, or beginning collector can benefit from, this is a fine resource. As a book for the more serious collector, one that is wanting to gain more information about value, logos, markings, dated pieces and what to look for, this book disappoints. One hundred thirty-six pages was just not enough to give me what I needed...MORE DETAILED INFORMATION! I bought this book because a good quality book on the art of collecting and knowing what to look for when purchasing good quality Delftware is impossible to find. The one example of a deeper, more informational book on Deftware is Rick Erickson's 'Royal Delft' A Guide to De Porceleyne Fles. However, as detailed as Mr. Erickson's book is, it only deals with the De Porceleyne Fles factory's style. If Mr. Van Hook were to dedicate his efforts to just one style, say De Wit for example, I would be the first to buy it. I am condfident that Mr. Van Hook's version would be filled with the kind of expert research, information and guidelines that the more experienced collector is looking for. Mr. Van Hook, I await and look forward to more of your efforts. Excellent work!!!Read full review
