Simply one of my all time favorite movies.. Paul Newman too of his game. But, George Kennedy as Dragline compliments Ol'Luke in so many different levels.. A must see movie for anyone

GK provided a very poor/unbelievable southern accent. Plot was o.k. One of the very few half believable roles filled by PN. I will pass this dvd on to friends who’ve never seen it, then to the thrift store.

Inexplicably, the great "Cool Hand Luke" did not make the American Film Institute's "100 Years, 100 Films" list. That is a tremendous oversight, almost as criminal as leaving "Citizen Kane" off the list. Paul Newman made a number of superb movies in his time but perhaps none is more memorable than "Cool Hand Luke." The DVD for this classic film includes a short documentary on the filming of the movie and the original theatrical trailer. The one down side of the "deluxe edition" is the commentary by Eric Lax. He offers little insight, in many cases reiterating what is said by the actors themselves in the documentary. He also mis-identifies the song "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" as "Let It Be" -- inexcusable. There are many DVDs with commentaries that are engaging, informative, and enjoyable. The commentary for this spectacular film, unfortunately, is not one of them.Read full review
To me, a lower middle class person born in the south in the mid 1950's, Cool Hand represents the highest catagory, benchmark movie/art of its day. The acting was simple elegant and superb, the dialog is clever and topical for the times. Newman was at the very top of his game. I am a devotee of his career and to me, this film represents the pinnicle film of his acting career. The social commentaries that it exploited are too obvious and too numerous to name. To top off the list of movie accompolishments, you would be forced to point out the incredible soundtrack that is as beautiful today as when Lalo Schifrin penned the melodies. The movie points out the crushing truth that we are, from birth, all forced to conform. Very topical stuff for 1967. I love this movie as it spoke to me as a young man, you will love it too. The old one are the best ones! Watch it, be haunted by it.Read full review
Paul Newman gives an outstanding performance in this motion picture as a convict dealing with life on hard labor in the south. The real delight in this story is the performance by George Kennedy (who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor). Newman stands out in his role, however without the performance by Kennedy the movie would not have been the big hit that it was. Highly recommended for a great story line and wonderful, fun acting. Rated 5 of 5 - this movie belongs in everyones DVD collection.
